I met with Dr. Medalie for a consultation in Feb2015 and had my surgery on Sept2015. The surgery lasted 1.5 hrs and when I woke up, I was in my compression garment and ready to go home! I know this isn't usual, but I wasn't even in that much pain. I was prescribed pain meds but didn't even have to take one the entire time! At all! The results look fantastic and I couldn't be happier with the way my chest looks! Everyone working there made sure I was comfortable and never once misgendered me or called me by my birth name. I was absolutely at ease the entire time!
Thanks for paying it forward by sharing your story. I'd love to hear more about your experience, what supplies did you gather beforehand to help with recovery? What were you most nervous about before surgery?
If you're up to sharing before and after photos, I know the community would appreciate it.
As for materials and prep pre-surgery, it goes as follows:
1- I purchased CaroMed compression vest to bring with me to the surgery center, as requested by Dr. Medalie. He put this garment on me immediately after surgery.
2- I brought 4 lightweight and oversized button-down shirts and baggy PJ pants to wear the week following the operation.
3- I made sure to eat a strictly "clean", high protein and non-processed foods diet for 3 months before the operation, to promote proper healing.
4- During the time that I adopted the diet, I also made sure to keep active.
Post op care that I adhere to:
1- Dr. Medalie gave me a comprehensive sheet of post-op care instructions to follow and boy, do I follow it to the letter. This will include buying various sterile surgical pads.
2- I made sure to keep active. The day I got out of surgery was the only day I was in bed for a long period of time. The following morning and every day for the first 7 days, I made sure to take short walks of up to 10 minutes about 3 to 4 times a day until I was able to walk for longer. A slow pace, of course (I guess this depends on how you're feeling post-op, but if you're up for it, then I definitely recommend it).
3- Still eating the "clean" diet. I really feel like it has made healing much easier.
As for what I was most nervous about, it had to be the nipple placement and the overall look of my chest. I was so nervous that it would look "unnatural", despite seeing wonderful results from Dr. Medalie online. When he marked up my chest just before going into surgery, I asked him about my nipple placement and he very kindly took the time to explain to me where they would end up, how large they would be and why he thinks they would be best in that place. Also, an important note is that Dr. Medalie will try to take into consideration the "type" of scar you would like to end up with (if anatomically possible), be it a tilted scar, curved or straight. I made sure to mention that I wanted a diagonal (tilted) scar and sure enough I got what I wanted!
Anyways, I really hope this helps. If anybody has any questions at all, I'll be more than happy to answer them. I'm almost 1 month post op and honestly still can't believe how perfect this chest looks and feels!
