I have had back pain and stomach pain when I...
I have had back pain and stomach pain when I sneeze for a very long time. I spent a decade doing pilates and yoga to repair my muscles but they were split too far. I felt as if I were unzipped. When sneezing, I would have to hold my stomach or I would get painful spasms. I could curl over and hold my midsection to avoid the pain. My back has hurt for so long I have been on pain killers. I want to get off them and I hoped that this operation would fix these issues. I think it is a bonus that my surgeon will also cut off my excess skin after he has repaired my muscles.
I don't understand how people do this operation and go home. I had my operation on Monday morning and didn't leave until Friday evening. I had drains but they came out after a couple of days because there was nothing coming out of them. I was given a course of anti biotic, morphine and I took vitamins too. I also was told by my surgeon not to shower, but just to have sponge baths. My daughter came to visit and started alluding to that episode of Seinfeld where George Constanza goes to visit his mother all the time in hospital just so he can watch the woman next door getting her sponge bath. "Georgie!!! Georgie!!! Stop treating your body like it's an amusement park!!" So this was a bad idea, because I started laughing and you really don't want to do that after this kind of operation.
I woke up with pumps on my legs that apparently help to avoid deep vein thrombosis. They stayed on for a few days. I could not get out of bed at all until a physiotherapist came around and showed me how. I had to get on my side and swing my legs down and sit up that way without using the stomach muscles at all.
Hospital was great because of the nurses and the equipment. It gave me a break. I have to wear a stretchy thing around my torso.
When I went home my son had set up my room very nicely, with lots of pillows so I could sleep sitting up and a pillow under my knees.
I have to say the pain has not been that bad. At first it felt really strange waking up and feeling a strong grip around my mid section, but it is the muscles all tightened.
I am now about 28 days post operation. I still haven't started back at yoga or had a swim. It is very very hot and I wish I'd done this operation in winter, although the holidays are the best time I suppose.
