Do not be fooled by the cutesy name.. a "Tummy...
At age 51, abdominal laxity was causing problems in my ability to brace my torso for work with patients all day and exercise in the evenings. As a personal trainer and athlete, I had achieved the maximal amount of abdominal tightness that was possible after carrying two children in an extremely anterior presentation. I worked around the extra skin as best as I could for 20 years, but rashes and ill fitting clothes were putting me on the sidelines. I decided to find out if an abdominoplasty could actually address the structural problem.
If I chose the wrong procedure, or the wrong practitioner, I could be out of a lot of money, with a soft belly covered by pretty skin.
Dr. Maggi listened to my goals and assessed my situation. He recommended the primary focus be on "plication of the rectus abdominus" with skin and fat removal concurrent with the decreased surface area. This would not be "skin deep".
Sounds logical, but it isn't simple, it takes a lot of experience to align and secure an individual's tissues in 3 dimensions to achieve both strength and mobility. Understand that internal and external lines of sutures total 5 feet! Any inch of which could become infected, endurated, or deformed. That is why Dr. Maggi and the staff Austin Plastic Surgery Center spent several appointments with me to train me and my caregiver on the procedures to avoid those bad outcomes.
His post-surgical instructions are logical, and manageable, but essential. He has the integrity to delay surgery until all those conditions can be assured for his patient. Most importantly, Dr. Maggi offers the integrity of managing his own private operating suite. The nurses and anesthetist are long-time team members who work together to provide consistency that optimizes safety. This is major surgery, and they respect that, and teach you to respect that, too-for your own good.
So, I chose Dr. Maggi, and his recommended procedure. I set a date, gathered all my items. Scheduled up my caregivers, took time off of work and took my blood tests. Would I look like the hundreds of "success" photos in his books or have lumpy sutures covered with tight "bad facelift" skin?
At Day 10 post-surgery, I already feel I have the answer. My abdominal muscles feel strong, supple and responsive, My skin sutures are flat and 75% closed. Pain has been very manageable, my vitals have remained stable, and there have been no complications at all. Following the post-surgical protocols got easier each day. Dressing changes are easy for me to myself, but I'm so glad I had help the first few days. The nurses taught me and my caregiver as many times as we needed with patience and humor. They reviewed my post-op care methodically and answered my texts in minutes. Their support reinforced the importance of the recovery instructions to achieve the best results.
10 days post-op, I feel very confident that this major surgery will result in the strength and flexibility I need to continue working and exercising. And, I am starting to get excited about all the things i might be able to do if my pants fit better. My sound like a small thing, but it's huge for me!
So far, I am fully satisfied with all aspects of this experience.
Provider Review
Manner-Dr. Maggi is warm and personable while being very focused on the medical details that matter. He is a careful listener, and picks up on patients' statements if they seem to mis-understand his instructions, and he re-teaches. He values safety enough to be be persistent. Answered Questions- He is good at explaining the procedure and documenting our common plan several times so that mis-understandings are cleared up prior to surgery. Once he realized that I hadn't set aside enough time for my surgery, he demonstrated integrity by delaying it a couple of months until I had arranged sufficient recuperation time and support. Communication is good-Dr. Maggi personally texted me and my caregiver hours after the surgery and over the recuperation period inquiring about me and reminding us of post-surgical tasks. He and his nurses were responsive to all calls and texts within minutes. He has the integrity to put together a long-standing team of nurses and an anesthetist, who provide consistency and skill. Excellent Staff- His staff are warm and skilled and patient and prompt on medical matters. In addition to their skill, they contributed a great amount to my positive attitude and good morale, which is a part of healing. They keep the anxiety down, so that I could remember their instructions. They complimented me on what I did right, and re-taught when I've made a mistake. I am ashamed to say that I neglected to buy a cane, and instead of fussing at me, one of the nurses lent me a cane. They area l about solving the problem quickly and staying focused on healing. That is the result of staff who work well together in a place they are confident about.
