I'm scheduled for a neck/ lower face lift next week. I've been following Dr Harley for 3 years on this site before I got up the nerve to schedule a consult. I met with him in April 2017 and booked the surgery for October. I feel like I look my age from the front but from the side view, my neck hangs horribly and I never want to leave the house. I've tried facial exercises and fat freezing but the turkey neck remains. No matter how much I diet and exercise it just hangs. I think it's genetic as my mom and other relatives have the same gobbler. I've looked at all the photos from the reviewers before me and I'm confident that Dr Harley is the one for me.

You go for it. You will be happy you did. I can't believe it has been three months that I had it done.

Not at all. I had a pain pill the first day and Tylenol after that. It was numb for awhile so there really wasn’t any pain. the hardest part was sleeping somewhat upright for a couple weeks.

I thought I'd post a couple before photos. From the front it's not so bad but the side view is awful for being 39. Even worse looking down. I won't even post that view. I'll admit after I started reading the comments on a few posts today, I've see a few people talking about lip palsy as a complication and that really scares me. My smile is really my best feature, everything else sags, and I can't imagine it being ruined. I'd really like to hear from those that experienced any lip palsy or nerve problems and how they resolved. Thank you!

Keep in mind that swelling can cause some issues. My smile is just a tad uneven (I doubt this is noticeable to anyone but me), but I think this is related to swelling in that I am more swollen on one side and just can't move my lips out as far there. Make no mistake, this is serious surgery and you will need time to recover. I am four weeks out, and I know I still have lots of healing to go.

I’m not aware of any long term lip palsy. It seems that any smile unevenness tends to even out as you heal. My smile was a little uneven for about 4-6 weeks (probably something only I could tell) but it has gone back to normal. I believe you are in good hands. You do have to be a little patient afterwards so your face can heal and all of us ladies like that part the least, but from my experience it will happen! I’m so happy with my result!

Thanks for posting this question - and also to those who have answered. It is my biggest fear with this surgery. After skulking on RS for an embarrassingly long time, it seems that almost every issue resolves itself with time so I'm sure you'll be happy with your result. You already look great!

This is my biggest fear as well. If I have to choose a saggy neck or half of my mouth not working, I'd have to choose keeping the saggy neck. I've seen several comments jut in the last few days about 3/4 ladies having the lip palsy and that has made me very nervous.

3/4 as in 3 or 4 ladies

You do have a beautiful smile! I am also scheduled for the Biltmore Lift later this month and have those concerns after the last week with some of what has been posted. I am definitely not a medical professional but when I researched the muscle that can sometimes receive bruising during plastic surgery and cause some temporary paralysis- I think it's the marginalis mandibular?, seems to be much more likely to be affected when a plastic surgeon performs liposuction on the neck. Again, I am NOT a professional for sure. One reason that I have chosen Dr. Harley is that he does a platysmaplasty and not liposuction. This is not to say that nerve cannot be affected by this surgery, but from the research I've done after this concern came up to me, it seems like though it's not too common - it CAN occur temporarily in a few cases. End point for myself - I'm more concerned than I was before but I think I'm going to be in really good and experienced hands with Dr. Harley and the discussions that have come up recently on Realself made me dig a bit deeper and become more informed myself before jumping into this. It IS a big decision to trust. Good luck to you - I suspect your results will be beautiful!

One more thing - though I've seen that bruising can occur to the nerve - I also have seen that, in most cases, it is usually short term as healing from the surgery is taking place.

I read about people going out to the Biltmore house and basically vacationing right after surgery. Causes a lot more swelling if you ask me, not to mention bending over and things like that, not resting, etc. Some people even drink cocktails the night before surgery! We all play a big roll in healing and some heal slower than others. I think you will be just great because you have a healthy expectation of post surgery issues.

Hello! I am having my procedure tomorrow. Just read about the lip palsy. I hope everything goes as planned and I don't have any nerve damage. I'm excited and nervous. Will post after the sx

I was originally scheduled in October 2017 for a Biltmore Lift. That same week there were three ladies all talking about having a lip palsy after the BL. I hadn’t seen that complication in reviews over the past couple years, and that made me pretty nervous. I didn’t want to have a procedure to look better and end up looking worse. From what I understand, the lip palsy is rare but is a possibility and it is temporary, but my anxiety was through the roof. It’s my face, and I wanted to make sure that it truly was temporary. I postponed my procedure to ensure that they healed from the palsy, as that is one of my biggest fears. I kept in contact with all 3 ladies and they all responded privately that they had improved before they eventually became inactive on this site. I think the nature of Real Self is to share in the beginning and then fade away once everything is back to normal and life moves on. I am now scheduled for the first week of February, less than a week away.
I just turned 40 years old. I am active and in good shape and within my weight range for my height, yet the turkey gobbler and jowls make my face look like I’m overweight or much older than 40, I blame heredity. I’ve never had any fillers and don’t plan to have any when I get the lift. I want to see exactly what results I’ll get with the lift alone. I’m not against fillers and may have them down the road, but for now, I’ll just be getting a lower face/ neck lift.
I’m a little nervous, but truly excited to get rid of the neck and jowls and looking forward to erasing 10 years off my lower face.

Your concern is understandable, especially with the ‘fading-out’ of updates from the patients you were following. Many times people are too overwhelmed to continue updates when they have suffered problems related to their surgery. Why not put the surgery off for awhile, on the back burner as they say. Surgery will always be available, take a break from the pressure of needing to have it done now. Good luck and best wishes
