Day 19 Post op

Oddly enough, weeks 2 & 3 have been more challenging than the first 7 days after surgery. New soreness under my chin and along my jawline developed but has lessened in the last few days. Dr H has assured me that based on my updated photos, all is progressing as expected. My incisions are healing well, though still a bit scabby under and behind the ears. I wear Medipac tape 24/7 [except when taking photos] and have let scabs naturally peal off, rather than pick at them. It looks like scarring with be minimal. Swelling and bruising are no longer a problem. I have a lot of flexibility over my time, so haven't faced going back to a demanding job or a rigorous schedule.
My suggestion to those looking ahead ~ plan for and give yourself time to heal, at your pace. Being a very active person, I figured I’d be back to my normal routine including 45-60 min high intensity exercise 5 days a week around a month after surgery. I was not mentally prepared for the extended, months long physical recovery I may realistically face. At first I was disheartened by this possibility, but now acknowledge the blessing of having down time as the holidays and year-end approaches. I am walking 1-2 miles on flat ground and not having any difficulty with that. I am an avid cyclist and would love to get back on my bike soon. Will check with Dr H before pursuing anything as rigorous.
Dr. Harley and his staff have been unbelievably supportive throughout this process, including responding to emails very quickly after hours. I highly recommend him not only for his skill as a surgeon but also because his actions illustrate that he truly cares about his patients. He could not have a better, more compassionate team supporting him. I interacted most with Juanita and she is a real blessing.
I will continue to post as my recovery progresses. I can't imagine this journey without the RS community, where I've found reviews, helpful suggestions and much needed support. Thanks to every one who has shared!

Day 10 ~ Ups and Downs
My first week of recovery went pretty smoothly. The second week has turned out to be a little more challenging. After having the stitches out on Day 8, I rested and iced the rest of the day. The next day [yesterday] we drove 1000 miles home, deciding to take a slightly longer route to avoid two major metro areas. Unfortunately this highway route included quite a few neglected areas with bumpy patches of road. About 2-3 hours into the drive, I was starting to feel quite uncomfortable in spite of continuing to ice and taking acetaminophen two at a time. I was able to drive for about 3 hours but that was it. By about the 8th hour of the 16 hour trip, I was in severe pain, mostly emanating from my neck and jawline, areas previously tender but never really focal points for pain during the first week after surgery. Each bump or sudden movement sent a jolt through my neck and jaw ~ I couldn't even swallow for a while. To get through the trip, I had to take one of the pain pills left from the surgery, knowing I wouldn't be able to stand being in the car for the rest of the time without one. When we arrived home, a look in the mirror revealed the swollen alien look had returned, in addition to the new pain along my jawline and neck. I have continued to ice and rest today. I noticed I've developed a small lump along my jawline, in addition to the swelling and am hopeful it will disappear as time goes on. My neck is hot, swollen on the sides and still very sore, though not as painful as yesterday. I am eating soft foods [blueberries and pineapple] and taking acetaminophen and icing for the pain. Still sleeping in a recliner and hoping tomorrow brings more relief from the neck pain and swelling. My experience of the last couple day has reinforced what others have said ~ recovery from surgery is a process with ups and downs. I am still excited about the changes I see from the BL, but have come to the realization that my recovery will continue for quite some time. Swelling and discomfort may be with me longer than I originally anticipated. I am sharing this in hopes that it is helpful to anyone else on their journey who may be temporarily discouraged or going through an extended healing process. Also, if you have a choice, don't try to drive a ridiculous distance in one day a week after surgery! A special thanks to those who continue to share all of their experiences ~ when the going is good and when it gets rough. It has helped me understand and accept the normalcy of mine.

Oh my... I don't think I could make a 1000 mile car trip even fully healthy/recovered!! Sounds like it was rough, literally. I hope you feel better soon!! I don't think I've seen anyone mention this, but are you on any antibiotics for a while after the surgery?? The "hot" part is concerning. Take care of yourself!! Did y'all really make it 1000 miles in 1 day?? That makes me hurt just thinking about it!! Hopefully you can rest up now.
Hi tabithanash ~ thank you for your post. I am not on any add'l antibiotics and believe the heat is from the healing tissues underneath. I do not have feel feverish, the flesh is warm to the touch. Also, I woke up with no pain this am, just normal tightness, soreness around the ears and slight swelling around the jawline and neck. Regarding the drive, it was all of 1K and just plain dumb to attempt. Though I am used to driving long distances for business and vacation trips, this is the farthest ever attempted in one day. We left Asheville before 5am so it seemed senseless to stop at 4 or 5pm when we were within a few hours of home, which we'd been away from for 11 days... I am fortunate that my schedule allows me to take it easy and rest, which I plan to do. I think the setback I described last night was due to the long drive on bumpy roads in very windy conditions and pray nothing major has gone wrong. Thank you for your comment and concern ~ support from RS-ers like yourself have been a real blessing to me through this journey! [RS bleep]
It's good to hear you don't feel feverish. Goodness gracious sounds like you were ready to be HOME!!! And I know I would be the same way. Wishing you fast healing now that you are home. I'm sure you will rest well now :) We look forward to seeing your progress in the coming weeks!! Be well :)
Hikergirl - you're home! Yes - driving 1000 miles after facial surgery (or not) does sound crazy but I think I completely understand just wanting to get it done - just get home. I really hope you're doing better today and can just rest and get back to balance with your healing. I drove home today - the 4 hours was fine for me and easy but once I got here, I had to drive down a cobblestone street - just ONE block but "holy moly", it was so painful, felt like membranes jiggling and bouncing between my ears. I thought of you and having to go over extended miles of rough roads - I really can't even begin to imagine how traumatic that must have been. Despite the fact that it sounds like an ordeal that you have yet to completely recover from - again, I'm grateful for the reiteration that quite a few women have stated to respect the recovery process and give it time because there will be ups and downs with everyone and it will make it so much easier if we don't stress our bodies and minds with overdoing. I already had a mental agenda of what I needed "to get done" once I got back home. Though I do have quite a bit to catch up on, I'll give a pass to more of the more physical stuff that I need to do and take baby steps even though I'm home and feeling so much better and so much closer to normal than I have these past days. Please take care!
One more thing: I do hope the pain has eased substantially a day out and I just looked at your newest photos again and you still look really amazing w/ fantastic results - ahh - to have a strong jawline!
Just wanted to say that from your photos you're still looking great. I hope you feel much better. What a loooooong drive!
i really dont see any swelling hence you look great for week two...but glad you told me about the journey complications since many of us will be traveling long distances as well...very helpful....and i can get the rural roads being bumpy and never thought about that...mmmmm
How is your recovery coming along? I hope you're feeling better after your long trip home (1000 miles - yikes!)
Hi Lisa - thank you for checking in. I plan to post an update later today w pics. The soreness along my jawline has decreased substantially though it still hurts if I press on it. Likewise under my chin, behind the incision. My incisions seem to be healing well too. I am so thankful for the support of RS-ers like yourself. Happy Friday!

Day 5 Update
I've been taking it easy the last few days, napping, reading and keeping up with the supplements. Also, I spent much of yesterday icing my neck because it was sore and having the gel pack on it felt really good. I haven't noticed any bruising and the swelling seems to be dissipating. Wish I could figure out how to do a split screen photo, as I have found these very helpful in reviewing other's progress. I appreciate anyone's input on how to do this. It is a lovely fall day in Asheville so we are headed out to drive the parkway down to Smokey Mtn NP. I am just a passenger, so will be able to fully enjoy the view. Thanks again for everyone's comments and well wishes, it means so much knowing there is such a supportive community who share this journey!

You look awesome. So much younger! Congrats. Enjoy your drive.. those mountains are where we would like to retire!
Thank you, we love Asheville, just not sure about the winters..... Lookng forward to following your journey, I believe you are scheduled for this coming week. Best wishes for safe travels and that your outcome is exactly what you hope for!!
beautiful job...congratulations!!!!
Thank you, Livehappy ~ what a joyful "nickname"! Great motto to live by ;o)
You look so natural and youthful! One app for creating screen shot splits is called “pic stitch”. Kind of appropriate! Lol. Rest and enjoy the scenery in Asheville.
Pic stitch ~ so appropriate! Will try to tackle that one when I'm more awake and feeling patient. Some photo apps aren't as intuitive to me as they may be to others. Thank you for the compliment ~ I am a very outdoorsy person so looking natural is important to me. Youthful? Well, I certainly dont act my age if that counts! LOL.
Sorry, I had you review open from yesterday and didn’t see your new update. You look so beautiful. You are healing so nicely!
Thanks GoldenShay, the light shade of yellow is visible on my neck below my ears. Only noticible in direct sun. Still icing cause it feels good and figure it can't hurt. Best wishes for your continued healing, looking forward to following your journey
Looking great already. Happy recovery.
Thank you meadowflower ~ hoping everything stays nice and tight as the healing progresses.
