In the spirit of a Happy Halloween!
$6,400
Ok... so I'm channeling my inner zombie and for the past few days have looked like a newly buried corpse who has clawed their way out from their coffin - flesh hanging from their face with red, weepy eyes.... ooh! So - at this point, I have to laugh, even though my remaining skin is too tight to do so as it has not fallen off yet - it just looks brown and in a mid-state of decomposition. I also have sent my husband text updates with the latest grossness - though I can be critical of him at times, he is very sweet with his replies to this all and even did his own research on chemical peels just so he could reassure me at one point. Bless him! And, I DO think it is appropriate as Halloween is right around the corner and I appear to be one of the walking dead in this pretty town of Asheville. This is part of the reality of getting a facial peel. It's JUST a point in my recovery and a facial peel involves PEELING of the skin and that's what it's doing. I can see some of the fresh skin emerging from the globby flesh balls around my mouth/chin area. It is VERY soft and pink and, at this point, the nasolabial folds that were very deep for my age are not visible. I do think this is also due to the sustained swelling that I also have from the BL but it IS a happy thing in the midst of this.
I will definitely post when I am on the other side of this as I don't want to deter anyone from getting a chemical peel from Dr. Harley or anyone else - I CAN see glimpses of what my skin will look like and I like what I see so far!
One thing though: everyone's skin is different and will peel at different rates. I thought I would be almost done peeling at this time (6 days out) but depending on the person, the peeling itself can start a bit later and then it does take time to slough off... and, it's nasty! So: my advice is give yourself at least 2 weeks before you have to go to work or see many people if you get a peel as it so varies from person to person in how long it will take. There is NO way I could wear makeup at this point and even sunscreen which is a MUST if you do a peel is very problematic as it is difficult to rub in and gets caught up in the flesh globs... really!
I can kind of smile on the inside at this point as this is so extreme AND I know it will pass - but it would seriously stress me out and not be good for my overall healing if I thought I would have to face many people/co-workers in the next 10 days.
Ok - the eyes: At this point, I definitely cannot see what the final result will be as my brown, dead skin is crinkled toward the eyes too. I have been putting in some soothing eye gel in the night but, though this is recommended - it has not been soothing and it messes up my vision even when I'm awake and it feels blurry. One eye of mine that was chronically irritated before this as I have an eye condition called Pterygium (aka: surfer's eye) and had a tendency towards mild redness, seems redder now. I bought some new eye drops this morning and, hopefully, they will work better.
My suggestion though: talk to Dr. Harley or people at his office or people here on Realself as I stood for about half an hour this morning at CVS with my flesh hanging off of my face and trying to figure out WHICH eye drop/tears could bring me relief. I ended up going w/ the fast acting preservative free tears and they have brought a bit of relief. I get my sutures out tomorrow morning and will ask if they have a specific recommendation.
Again: once I'm on the other side of healing - hopefully in a few weeks, I will post how my eyes look now vs. before.
My Biltmore lift: It is so nice to touch my chin and not have a flappy thing to fiddle with - I like the curve of my neck, it doesn't hurt at all but it's still tender. I have ALOT of swelling that makes my face somewhat diamond looking - this is the alien look for sure and have a feeling this will continue for a few weeks. I have been icing but haven't seen it help so much so feel a bit discouraged with that but will continue to try. I don't have very much bruising - a bit, but mild.
If any of you have any suggestions that were helpful at easing out sustained swelling, please share with me as this also makes me feel self conscious.
Last thing: I had to move from my hotel (Country Inn & Suites) to an airbnb my last 2 nights as I got mixed up on when my sutures would actually be removed. In the spirit of frugality and trying to save money, I got a place that wasn't the lowest price at all but was on the lower end of the scale. I have used airbnb successfully before and been VERY happy. However, this place is not nice. And it has a treacherous drive down a gravel hill that is not in good shape. I can kind of handle it now though it makes me tense that I'm going to damage my car but if I was just out of surgery any earlier, it would have been really stressful for me and dangerous. And it has sugar ants in the bathroom (no food in there) ... it's not conducive to a relaxing recovery. AND, the walls are so thin that you can hear the person in the next room reading the paper and turning the pages...
Since there are so many airbnbs in Asheville and so many places - my suggestion is only choose one that has quite a few pictures of the property, the actual dwelling and room, etc.
I made my mistake on this one and have learned my lesson. If you do your homework and make sure you know what to expect with numerous pictures, you will probably be fine for sure. BTW: this place had good reviews but I do think that people are hesitant to post bad ones on airbnb unless the reality is quite extreme.
That's it for now - Happy Halloween Everyone!
Also - wishing well to all the women on real self who are recovering from their procedures right now or are up in the next day or so - good luck to you all!

I'm on the other side - very happy!
I'm a day out now - very relieved and happy with my results so far. Molena was my caretaker and she was extremely caring and helpful as she drove me bright and early for the 6:15 appt. She was very soothing and that really helped with my nerves and uneasiness - extremely grateful for that. After I took the famous "cocktail" of the pills, we went in and took the pre-pictures. I was feeling very awake and concerned that I might need more meds - I remember commenting that the music was the theme song for "Game of Thrones" and then... nothing. I don't even remember getting into the chair. There was one point where I was half awake during procedure and could hear Dr. Harley and Kelly speaking and feel something on my face but it didn't hurt at all - felt almost kind of interesting.
I don't remember going back to the hotel either. Molena made my pillow structure for me and 'tucked me in" - so nice! And then I literally slept in one position - no movement - for 24 hrs. I was completely knocked out. My family called to check in at one point - I don't remember that either. Molena woke me throughout the day/evening for medication and little spoons of applesauce and water. At one point, I remember getting nauseous and scared that I would have the dry heaves - I think it was after taking the anti-nausea pill but she gave me something that made it go away quite quickly- thankfully.
I had little to no discomfort, not even the weird head hammock - it just didn't bother me - but I was asleep.
Getting the headdress and drain out this morning - again, very easy and I was happy to see Dr. Harley and Kelly.
So - individual procedures -
Biltmore Lift: Love the results so far - very natural. No bruising so far but I think people have said they arise a few days after surgery so will not be surprised when/if that happens.
The chemical peel: I'm posting a lot of pictures. They're fairly grotesque BUT much less so than I anticipated. I hope the pictures can be helpful for people considering this in what to expect in the first few days for chemical peel. It's NOT painful - just looks bad.
The lower bleph: This was the one where I could not decide!! At the face/face consult with Dr. Harley the day before surgery - he said I could have it done at a different time if I wished and I really couldn't figure out whether the results would be what I wanted them to be. I was very concerned about having hollows under my eyes as a result of the fat being taken out. Different doctors I had consulted with had all recommended different techniques and ways of doing a lower bleph for me and that had been very confusing.
When I walked in the door to the office at 6:15 I STILL didn't know my answer - but I decided to go through with it. Right now they are puffy but I really think I'm going to like the final result. Dr. Harley also said this morning that if we decide there is some excess skin after the healing that we could go back and tighten that up - that he had not wanted to take skin at this point as my eyes were not at that point yet (something like that) . I truly appreciate that he took the conservative path with them.
I had the trans-conjunctival - which is where he went in from the inside and only took fat out conservatively. That's it - there are no stitches on the outside for me. They do not hurt at all at this point. Also, I have chronic dry eye and take omega oils to help with the inflammation in my eyes. Omega oils are on the list of things to NOT take for 2 weeks prior to the surgery so they were hurting before the surgery. It's interesting that now - they don't hurt - I hope it stays that way!
Ummm - let's see. I was dreading sleeping upright but I've been really comfy and slept even more today - for hours!
The pain: after Molena left, I went to the tylenol for pain but just took 2 of the hydrocodone to stay on top of it because it was starting to hurt behind my ears. Thankful for those who have mentioned to stay in front of the pain - will do so.
Thank you all so much for the support through this and all who have posted and shared so much information that has made this journey a positive one!

Your jawline and neck look awesome and, like you said, so natural. Glad everything went smoothly through each part of the procedure and that you are getting a lot of rest. Looking forward to following your progress!
Thank you so much for continuing to check in. Your results look so wonderful. I love to touch underneath my chin and have nothing flappy there - so satisfying!
I know EXACTLY what you mean. Ya-hoo!!I woke up with some lingering soreness around my right ear (which seems to be my troublesome spot). Also some slight yellowing on my neck. Helpful reminders to take it slow and not do too much. Continuing to send positive thoughts your way!
so excited for you and can't wait to see more! I may have to divorce my husband.........but I'm getting this done. lol you look great! love the peel pics too.
Thank you so much - yeah, the peel looks really intense but doesn't hurt at all. I just want it gone and to see the results - have to practice patience!
How are you doing hiker girl? I think you're getting your stitches out today and think that will be such an exciting milestone. If you're driving home today - I wish you a safe journey. I hope you continue to check in with your progress and results. Even though we didn't meet face to face, it's been a comfort to me knowing that you and buffie33 have been here in asheville recovering at the same time as me and seeing your great results and hearing about your experiences. Safe journey home!
Thank you Lovethebeach! I was glad to get the sutures out and I even got to meet Buffie33 in Dr H's office! What a lovely and brave woman. Dr H and his team are a real blessing, I am thankful to have found such a caring and skillful surgeon and the compassionate woman who support him. My neck is sore, especially on the sides under my ears so I am continuing to ice. We are resting up before the long drive home tomorrow. I hope you are healing well and resting on this rainy day! Looking forward to seeing the results of your peel and BL. I know it takes awhile for the peeling to complete ~ the renewal will be worth the wait. Will continue to post as my recovery progresses. So glad we connected, even if only on RS! Best wishes!
You really look great so far, after the peel you will have smooth silky skin for sure. How long will you be in Ashville lovethebeach63? I am heading that way tonight or early in the morning. I have my pre op appointment at noon. I was wondering about the weather there. I have heard there was bad flooding.
Thank you - I'm in Asheville until Thursday morning when I get my stitches out. I'm not sure where you're coming from but I think roads should be fine at this point. Yesterday, there was very heavy rain which affected some areas more than others. Everything is drying out for sure so the drive should probably be fine. I will be moving to an airbnb this morning for my last 2 days. I have chosen to be inside this entire time since the surgery as with my partial peeling (or lack of it) and swelling, I look like a halloween crypt keeper...seriously! I just went outside to bring some of my stuff to the car - the fresh air felt so good and it's a beautiful day here! I will be thinking of you and sending you very positive vibrations - remember to rest and take care of yourself after the surgery!
lovethebeach63 I will be at Dr Harley's office at 8:30 Thursday morning. I pray everything goes well for me as well. Good luck on your healing process and keep me posted please.
Hi lbiddle - I might see you there as I will be there at 8:45 for suture removal. As so many have shared here - you are in very good hands with Dr. Harley and his crew and the reality of "surgery day" is so much easier than the buildup and pre-procedure nerves that so many people have - I did for sure. I just posted graphic pictures of the present state of my peel that are not so nice but are just a point in my recovery- BUT I'm looking forward to seeing the end result which I expect will be quite happy with. I hope you can relax today and enjoy Asheville before your surgery tomorrow- sleep well tonight- I'm very excited for you!
So glad to hear that you're sleeping well and not in much pain. I'm very interested in following your progress as I want/need the peel but am very nervous. You look great so far!
Thank you! So far the peel has been good but I can't tell the final results as I haven't actually started peeling yet. I will keep you posted. It's definitely not painful though it looks like it might be - not at all. The application of the chemicals I could feel a little bit - I was semi-awake but it really was not bad at all.
You look awesome. Keep us posted on your progress..
Thank you so much - I appreciate the support! Still quite swollen and alien but not so much bruising. Hoping I'll peel more soon as the skin is really dark/crusty and I have slimy aquaphor all over my face... definitely not a great look! I want to go for a walk today but feel pretty self conscious.
I felt like a reptile when I did the TCA peel (only lower lids compared to your full face) and the 24/7 aquaphor slime with the brown crusty skin...then you peel and have soft, smooth skin. All worth it!
Thank you so much - I'm thinking of you this week - I can't remember if you're tomorrow or the next day - but definitely sending you well wishes! I noticed a question you had concerning lower bleph on a different post that you had. Dr. Harley will ask you what exactly you wish to achieve with the lower bleph. In my case - I primarily wanted the bags gone. That is why he decided only to go in from the inside and remove some of the fat conservatively. If I had had a lot of excess skin below eye, he probably would have done the procedure on the outside and taken a bit of skin off and sewn under lashes from outside. I like that he takes each patient on a case by case basis and decides how he will go about doing the procedure based on what their concerns are. He is very conservative in his approach and that put me at ease - better to do less and then see the results rather than take too much skin or something that could result in a bad result. Anyway - the lower bleph was by far the most difficult decision I made for myself - I was really scared that it would change the shape of my eyes or there could be problems. In the end, I'm very happy that I made the decision to go ahead with it - I truly trust Dr. Harley and his experience and his eye for the best results. Also - he will tell you as clearly as possible what results are practical to expect - you're in great hands! Sending you calm and healing energy!
Thank you - how long was it before you started to peel? I just have one tiny spot that's like a pencil point that has flaked - the rest has not started to peel and doesn't seem all that close to getting to that point. I can't imagine wearing makeup at this point or even putting sunscreen on it seems like it would be hard. Will call in to the office again tomorrow.
Hey, lovethebeach. I didn't peel until day 7, finished day 8 (the day I flew home!). Before that, I couldn't really tell I was getting ready to peel. Ha, I remember the gross brown skin and slathering the aquaphor on every few hours (shudder...
(Continuued)... I didnt even think about make up until after I fully peeled. It sounds like you are on track so try not to worry. You WILL peel, no doubt. Until then, try to make sure you have a layer of aquaphor on at all times and avoid sun exposure/wear a hat. This will all be worthwhile when you see your new, soft skin. :)
Thank you so much for sharing your experience - this is soo gross!! I'm happy I didn't think through the reality of it before I did it as I think I might have had second thoughts. I didn't think it could get worse than yesterday with almost no peeling but now as I have chunks of flesh literally hanging from my cheeks like I clawed out from my coffin, oh boy... I know it's going to be ok but it soo helps to hear from others and I hope I have good results when it's all done. My face is still pointy too and diamond like. Did you have a a good sunscreen that worked? I am just using neutrogena w/ the helioplex - so nasty mixed in w/ the aquaphor. Anyway - thank you again - I SOO appreciate it!
Ha, chunks of flesh is right! My skin would peel in clumps and when I applied more aquaphor it would roll into a skinny firm flesh log...eeew. I used a Cetaphil product with SPF, but it was hard to use with the aquaphor. I would pat my lower lids (did not do full face peel but wish I had) lightly with a soft wash cloth, apply the sunscreen then reapply aquaphor. I was so relieved I finished the morning I flew out... "peeling" definitely was not a good look. :)
Thank you for the specifics - it helps to have advice from a person who has been in this place!
Thank you for the information on the peel too. Your Jawline looks really good. I had the neck/lower lift in mid-September. A week later, just after I got home a bruise developed near my left ear. It's still resolving and this is almost week 6. The lumps and bumps come and go, right now though everything looks really good and very happy with the results. I had a day, were I woke up around week 4-5 and was so lumpy. I was coming down with a cold and also swelling under eyes. A week later though, everything settled down very nicely and looks better than at the beginning. Maybe expect some ups and downs.....
Thank you so much for thumbs up on potential glitches that "might" happen down the road. I still look like an alien - very swollen and have not yet started to peel so it looks like someone wrote on my face with brown magic marker. I checked in with the office this morning and they told me that it sometimes takes as long as 8 days for people to begin to peel. Though I dislike this "look", that was a relief as long as I know and understand a timeline. I'm grateful I don't have to see many people besides my family for awhile. I also can adjust my "start date" to begin teaching again if I have to - if I still look puffy at that point. Anyway - thank you again for the advice to expect ups and downs as it truly helps temper expectations and maintain patience and be stress free.
You’re welcome! I’ve been finding that the normal healing process can have some unexpected lumps and bumps and can cause some concern. So just wanted to give a heads up. Will love to see all of your results. Happy healing
I agree. We need to be honest with our sisters about this lift. No one is obligated to review or post pictures, or even comment however if one does, please be honest about the good, the bad and the occasional ugly. Or else what exactly is your goal with your review? To be told verbatim how beautiful you are? As many of you know, I've been raked over the coals for my brutal honesty and emotions but if it helps one person to look before they leap, I'm ok with that. Again, ask the doctor in great detail about your outcome and healing and take most of these reviews with a grain of salt.
You look brilliant I'm so glad everything went well just try and rest sending you loads of hugs x
Thank you so much for the well wishes and care - I re-checked your review yesterday with your great results. Are you still in the states or have you returned to Ireland yet? I hope you're continuing to heal well!
Hi lovethebeach63 I'm back home aw had a wonderful time in ashville new York was ok tooo busy I'm nearly 4 weeks and still numb a little sore on my ears but doing great I still have the stitches under my chin I hope they dissolve soon I hope you are doing good how are you finding the peel xx

Nervous and excited as I wrap up what I need to...
Nervous and excited as I wrap up what I need to before leaving for my week in Asheville, NC. I’ll be driving 4 hours and will be getting the Biltmore Lift and a possible lower blepharoplasty as well as chemical peel.
I’ve been helped, guided and encouraged so much from reading and studying the reviews here on RealSelf and very thankful for that. I’m quite a private person so not used to sharing so much but, like many others, I just want to give back and maybe pass on some details of my experience that might be helpful to others. Though I am not sure at this point if I will be going through with the lower bleph and chemical peel – if I do, I’ll try my best to be as clear as possible about those procedures as there are not as many people who post on that and I have valued those that have.Gosh, where to start? Used to look younger than my years and now look much older than my years and… it sucks! I didn’t used to think of myself as overly focused on appearance but as the aging has become so pronounced and accelerated, I find myself preoccupied with it a lot. I teach and perform with a very athletic art form so it’s hard to teach when I’m usually in front of a wall of mirrors and performing and speaking in front of people has become really hard as I just feel ugly. I could qualify that – but that’s how I feel and then I receive lots of pictures of myself and … yep, right – uglier than I thought and the neck!!! Aargh! So – despite my many fears and doubts, I am SO ready to take this on and, hopefully, come out the other side just looking better and not so very old and tired looking. Why Dr. Harley? I interviewed with 3 local doctors. Of those, there was one that I almost went with who had a good reputation, a long time before I could even see him for consultation because of his popularity, had personally been recommended by an acquaintance and also did a more minimally invasive procedure like Dr. Harley. After all the expenses are added up for the procedure/s with Dr. Harley, the local doctor would have been more expensive but not by much. But really, though he was recommended there were a few things that didn’t settle well with me during the consult and the uneasy feeling grew. By that time, I was considering Dr. Harley but didn’t really think I would go through with going with a doctor that I found on the internet on a plastic surgery site – but I did! Of course, I’ve been second guessing myself and researching all through the process even after my phone consult w/ Dr. Harley and paying the $500 deposit. I’m more than happy to pay more money (within reason) for the best results and after a lot of really careful consideration, I truly felt like I would be better off going w/ Dr. Harley. As many others have expressed: the interactions with both the office staff (Juanita and Laurie) as well as my phone consultation have been great – yes, they seem like kind, caring, extremely competent people. For my lower bleph, we will wait until the face/face consult the day before surgery to make that decision when he can examine me in person. Definitely, he did not try to “sell” me on getting more done or even on the procedures I’m interested in w/ him. He was clear on what I could/could not expect or hope for.As there has been some recent controversy on this site concerning Biltmore and what it can or cannot do. I’m quite clear that this is a “lower face/neck lift” – that the results are going to primarily be in that area. Also aware that I have fairly deep wrinkles for my age (53) and that the lift might help to soften a few areas – but slightly. I get that and I’m fine with that. I don’t want to look pulled or tight. Also, even when I had a jawline, it was never all that defined – that’s just not my anatomy. And though I would love to have that super defined angle that some patients have, it will probably not happen as dramatically for me. Oh well!Posting pix that I’ll probably take down at some point. I really want to think that I look better than the mug shots I sent to Dr. Harley. I look better when I smile, but… I can’t smile all the time ‘cause it’s creepy! I’m excited that there are a lot of women on this site who have just had their surgeries in the past weeks (and look great!) and there are so many who are up this week!
Can't wait to see your afters!!! I'm scheduled for February :)
Thank you! That's exciting - the 3 months will most likely go by very quickly!
I can tell from your smiling picture that you have a very youthful look to you and I do think you'll get great results. When I did my review I made it a point to not post smiling pics because they hide so much but I wish I would have as it does show how easy it was for me to convince myself I was still ok. But of course when I'd see candids of myself I was horrified ! When did I get so old looking... I had aged so well up until recently? Gosh I guess I never noticed myself aging! Lol Anyhow I know exactly how you feel - I did the lift and the upper and lower bleph and I'm very happy I did its been less than two weeks so I still see changes to my face daily. So far I still have some swelling but everyday it gets better. About the bleph - it was the recovery I feared most and it's been amazing. In fact when my sister saw me (who did hers ten years ago) she was shocked at how quickly I had healed in one week! She told me it took her two weeks to look semi-normal and the first week she was black and blue and very very swollen. Any questions feel free to message me. I've had a great experience w my procedures w. Dr harley and I'm am very confident you will be happy with whatever procedure/s you decide to go with! Best of luck to you and I will be following your journey.
I'm looking forward to hear from you after the 19th, to see how it was, ..
I'm especially looking forward to your "after" pictures :)
I'm especially looking forward to your "after" pictures :)
=MsBeee, Thanks for sharing! A few negative posts like Olivia aka Southern Belle & tha Zsa zsa who said her lift fell in a couple of months have made me very nerveous. Why would Dr Harley's work not last as long as other doctors?
Thank you so much MsBeee - your reviews have been really helpful and I've loved watching your recovery and seeing your results. I've made your smoothie that you posted quite a few times - it's soo good!! Yeah, the bleph is the scariest part for me and how the results will actually be - there are so many different procedures for dealing with the underage and I don't know what's best. It's been good to see your closeups as it's looking great. I appreciate your encouragement.
Thank you - I'll keep posting!
Thank you - I posted down there - get mixed up on these replies - will keep posting.
I'm looking forward to seeing your results. I'm sure they'll be great. All of Dr. Harley's patients look natural be years younger. All the best! :)

That's great to hear - thank you! Yes, your results look fantastic and very reassuring.
Did you use retin-a before the peel?
Hi lovethebeach63 no Dr used botox about 1 month before out of all the procedures I got that was tough I'm not sure what way Dr Harley does it for me it was the best thing I've ever done regarding wrinkles I never leave the house without factor 50 summer or winter I use the image products and I find them great xx
Perfect - thank you so much for the details!
