What a Difference a Couple of Syringes Make! San Mateo, CA

I am a 48 year old woman with a decent amount of sun damage from years as a blond hair blue eye kid before sunscreen was a thing. I have been working hard to keep my skin cared for - including attempting to keep up on Retinol, antioxidants, monthly micro-dermabrasion treatments and really high quality moisturizers. Even with all these my cheek skin was looking more and more crepey. I consulted with my Dermatologist and we decided to inject the cheek area with Voluma XC to see if that would give me enough "lift" to be satisfied. They also happened to be having a special which included a free syringe of Juvederm so I had that applied to the quote marks along nose line and some under my frown lines on chin.

I am about a week and half out and have to say I am THRILLED. My Derm (Dr. Carrie Chui at Alura Skin and Laser in San Mateo CA) is incredibly gifted with her technique - I was fine to go out that same night! As you will see in the photos however, I had some weird looking swelling the day after but that resolved within a couple of days.

I was sore at the injection sites (which were many) and it was ouchy to sleep on my side for the first few days but all has resolved.

The difference is exactly what I was hoping for - subtle enough that no one would think I had anything done but enough so that I can see/feel a difference. I think I look more youthful and have had numerous people comment that my skin is looking great - I look rested - have I been on a vacation lately?

Pricey for sure but if I can get 2 years out of it that would be great. If not I am still completely satisfied.

hi, I can definitely tell a difference on your upper cheek area. how many syringes did you get? from March 2014 to May 2014 I had 2cc in each cheek plus 1cc in my chin area to try to push up my frown lines. after about a year I'm noticing a deflation again and am going back in July for a touch up. (expensive touch up)

Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Sadly, all I paid attention to was that she injected one syringe per side of voluma. Standard 1cc? I'm already sad to think of them deflating as I feel so happy with the mild but wonderful result. My derm charged $900 for first syringe and $800 for second. I did get the jive derm for free (usually a $600 charge).

yes 1 cc is standard. I was surprised to find out that 2cc total is 1/2 of a teaspoon. it seems like such a small amount! Lets us know if you get more after the swelling goes down. After about two weeks things "settle in" and some people go back for more (as I did). .

You look wonderful - refreshed and youthful. You've made a Voluma believer out of me. Thanks for sharing your photos!

Yes.

It is a nice, subtle and natural difference. Thank you so much for sharing your pics!

When you say ouchy, would you say tender to the touch or too sore to sleep on that side? Was it like wake-you-up sore? Do you have any other procedures planned or is this it for now?

Congrats to you and keep us posted on what's next for you!

Thanks Chris - Voluma is thicker than other fillers and is injected deeper in the tissue so the ouchy when sleeping was a combination of typical soreness from the injections themselves and then a deeper soreness. It did wake me up the first couple of nights but it was completely tolerable - just a bit of irritant. Icing helped a lot. The more you can ice in the first 12-24 hours the better. My swelling the morning after was definitely due to sleeping flat and not icing enough. I am done for now - except for regular botox (although I'm thinking I may be able to go longer as the crow's feet are also a little lessened by the lifting from Voluma).

Gotcha, thanks for explaining that! Good to know about the sleeping flat/swelling connection!

Thanks much!

Ok then - 2cc's total. I will let you know if I get more - it's so tempting b/c I'm so happy with the result but my biggest fear is being over done. Luckily, I completely trust my Dermatologist. Thanks again for the kind words.

Here is an updated photo one month out. Definitely see slight a decrease in volume but continue to be happy with results. Just hope it lasts.

I had several syringes of volumes done in March. I had some in temple, cheeks, eyes, and lips. I did not see any lessening of results. I will go in at one year for touch up. Love the results.

when do you think you'll need to go back for more? does it last?? thank you!
November 9, 2015
Good question - so far so good. I look and feel the same and it's been 6 months and everything has stayed put. I really couldn't be happier - I know it's a subtle effect but I love it!

Now that the swelling went down I admit I don't see a difference between your before pic and this one. I could definitely tell in the photos shortly after the injection. that is the problem with voluma, once it settles in it goes so deep that the plumping affect diminishes. I had to get 2cc in each cheek because the first cc disappeared within a month or so as it softened.

It's been an interesting process - overall I see and feel the difference still but there are days when it's less noticeable and days when it's more noticeable - I chalk it up to water retention mostly. Have you been happy with the results from the additional cc's? Any before/after photos to share?

hi, yes I am glad that I got the additional cc's. I work full time and have middle class/upper middle class income, so by no means do I have money floating around that can't be used for something better, BUT i look at this way. I spent around $1600 on 2 cc and I could not really tell the difference. I spent another $1600 on two more cc and the difference was very nice for almost two years. people complimented me on how young I looked, so I know it worked. So for me it was worth it. I do have pics on my page if you click on my name.
