Black Girl Magic - A Rhinoplasty Adventure in Turkey
What an adventure! I had rhinoplasty in Istanbul about 2 weeks ago with Dr. Bora Ok. I'm in love with my results so far. I can't believe how great my nose looks already, why the heck didn't I do this before?
A few things you should know about me
1. I've blown up their inbox with about one million questions for over one year. Meticulous, much?
2. I will not be sharing any personal pictures of my procedure. Don't ask me to share my pics - I won't.
3. Please see point 2.
4. I was born and raised in Canada.
5. Please see point 2.
I had a wonderful experience with Dr. B and his team. Everyone was really sweet, understanding and super kind. As a Black girl looking to have rhinoplasty, I had a lot to think about:
How does this procedure relate to some internalized racism?
Can I still consider myself to be a proud Black woman?
Am I a sell-out?
Have I been brainwashed by the media?
I'm OK looking, why put myself through this?
Though I'm still actively unpacking the above , I am 1000% glad that I had this procedure done. I am on a quest to be my most beautiful self and I don't have to justify that to anyone.
Enough of me waxing philosophical, shall we get to the nitty-gritty?
Dr. B.
He is a very sweet, boyishly charming doctor. I had a Skype consultation with him in spring of this year. He is very astute and honest with a keen eye for aesthetics. I also requested an extra consultation with him the day before my surgery. Meeting him was so helpful. I had brought my wish pics with me (I'll attach them shortly) and we went over each and every picture, one by one. He is so eagle-eyed that he even pointed out imperfections and asymmetries in them that I had not noticed! He took the time to look at my face, I mean REAAALLLY look at my face and my bone structure. He felt my nose and explained to me what he could do. I told him that I was looking for a much higher, narrower bridge and a lot of tip refinement. To give you an idea of what my nose looked like before, think of the blue creatures in the Avatar movie; very wide, low bridge, hanging columnella and bulbous tip. I wanted something much slimmer, thinner and feminine. After this meeting ( I think that it was about one hour), I was 10000% confident that I had made the right decision to go with him, that he understood what I wanted and that he could deliver. He was very nice to me and thanked me for having been honest with my wants. Often, in his practice, people are not forthright about their wishes. So for instance, a person with a wide bridge and bulbous tip will come in with an Angelina Jolie wish pic... and will also tell him that they want to maintain the ethnic integrity of their nose. Umm. No, Sis - that's not how that works. My best advice to you: be honest with yourself (and with the Dr.) about what you desire. He really understands beauty and facial harmony. Ask for a one-on-one consultation before your surgery. He also asked me to bring my wish pics in the OR so that he can refer to them during the surgery. I made sure to have them with me before they put me under.
Staff
The ladies that Dr. B works with are frigging beautiful. I mean, like - why are you so hot, Sis? As it turns out, plastics in Turkey is not a taboo issue. Everyone that can afford it does it. It is a non-issue. Even walking around Istanbul, I would regularly see people with bandages on their noses. Ilgrin, Kaya and Damla were very lovely and nice to me. I never waited more than 24 hours for a reply to an email and they are on whatsapp for even faster access. Sure, there were a few hiccups here and there but, nothing that wasn't quickly fixed to my satisfaction. They all speak English just fine and at no point did I feel misunderstood. If you are a bit of a keener, like me, I would suggest that you share your concerns with them. They are super understanding and sweet.
Surgery
The hospital is quite modern. This facility is clean and beyond reproach. I had my own hospital room with a luxurious bathroom. Dr. B and his nurse came to see me before the surgery. I was marked up, had my wish pics tucked under my arm and had my IV put in. That's all that I remember.
Waking up afterwards was surreal. I felt some pressure on my nose, not pain but pressure. The staff was so sweet. This wonderful nurse would come in every few hours and would put an ice pack over my eyes in the most incredibly gentle manner. As soon as I felt pain, I would let the nurses know and they would administer the pain meds accordingly. There was a lot of discomfort, nasal mucus. My nasal drip pad had to be changed regularly. All of this is normal and to be expected. I drifted in and out of consciousness, again to be expected.
The following day, Dr. B and his nurse came to see me and I was discharged. They had picked up my pain meds for me too. They assured me that everything went well. Dr. B even joked that he could not tell my nose from my wish pic. I hugged him and thanked him and his nurse for their care.
Hotel + Recovery
I took a taxi to the Volley hotel. I was very swollen and bandaged up. I was not able to breathe through my nose for about one week until the nasal packs were removed. Pain and discomfort peaked at about days 2-3. I took a walk to the nearest pharmacy and bought some more stuff to make a nasal drip pad: tape and gauze. I also bought some laxatives... because, well, because... and some sleeping pills too as it was very difficult to sleep when you can't breathe through your nose. I took a walk outside of the hotel almost every day. People stared, it was weird but manageable.
The only thing that I would MAYBE change is the hotel room. The daily breakfast was nice though and I ordered room service regularly. It was comfortable but not luxurious. So, I should have known that going in and shared that concern with Dr. B's staff. Oh, well, that was on me. I could have also inquired about upgrading the room or another hotel altogether. But this is the fancy-pants girl in me talking. The bed was big and comfy, I asked for extra pillows and blankets and to be perfectly honest, all that you'll want to do during your time at the hotel is sleep and be comfy. When I felt a bit better, I would venture away from the hotel and found a super cute shopping mall, it's called the Capitol. They had a Krispy Kreme. I was happy. I watched some Turkish TV and CNN and streamed cartoons on my laptop.
You can ask the hotel reception to provide you with a bag of ice, they will oblige. When I was there, there were some nice ladies from the UK that were also in Istanbul for some work. Since this hotel is so close to the hospital, they frequently get guests that are recovering from having work done.
Recovery Now and Beyond
I'm about 17 days post op now and I feel totally fine. I still can't believe that I had a nose job. I just got home last Sunday. I had closed rhinoplasty and my alars were not cut. All of my incisions are inside my nose and I am so thankful for that. I also opted to have cadaver cartilage instead of rib cartilage. I didn't want any scars on my ribs. This was one of the BEST things that I have ever done. The only thing that I would change would be to have done this sooner. I take very good care of my nose. I clean it twice a day very gently with a Q-tip dipped in peroxide, some Stérimar nasal spray and some polysporin/bactroban gel or vaseline. My nose looks better and better day by day. It looks like I was blessed with a beautiful nose that fits my face perfectly. I know that it will continue to improve as the swelling reduces but, I'd be totally fine if it looks the way it looks right now forever- this is how frigging good it looks.
TL;DR - Dr. B gave me a beautiful nose that fits my face perfectly. Bottom line, if you are a Black girl looking for rhinoplasty, don't hesitate to choose him.
