Minimal Benefit Plus Nerve Damage - Very Disappointing Results
I had this treatment to reduce the fat pads (bags) under my eyes - I've had them all my life and as I age and my skin starts to lose elasticity they seemed to get more pronounced, making me look tired and even older than I am.
I've been considering blepharoplasty for a year or two, but was hesitating because I was really concerned that the wrong surgeon could mess up the procedure and make me look worse. I decided to give Accutite a try because it was minimally invasive and has fewer potential side effects than standard blepharoplasty.
The procedure itself was painless (thanks to numbing injections and nitrous oxide) and the swelling was minimal after the first few days. The pain after the procedure only lasted about 3 days (although my eye area was really tender for 2-3 weeks after) and was manageable with a minimal amount of Tylenol. The bruising was pretty obvious for about three weeks, but it was easily covered by makeup.
However, the procedure didn't work. The "after" pictures taken at 8 weeks show, at most, a 25% reduction in the fat beneath my eyes. Also, I appear to have some nerve damage to the treated area - I can't feel some parts of my lower lids, and if I rub my eyes the area stings, which never happened before the procedure. I was actually prepared for that to possibly happen; a friend of mine had blepharoplasty and lost sensation in parts of the skin around her eyes too (5 years later, it still hasn't come back). Now it's been three months since my Accutite treatment - I'm hoping the sensation comes back, but the surgeon said it might not.
I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones - when I went in for my 8 week check-in and the surgeon admitted she was also disappointed with my results. She said it was "very unusual" to see so little improvement. At the time, she said my body might still be absorbing the fat and that I should give it the full three months to see the final results (the brochure says it can take up to 3 months to see full results). If there was no change after 3 months, she offered to try to get better results with a profractional laser treatment free of charge, but I've read that doesn't work for under eye bags and that the downtime after the procedure (especially around the eyes) is significant because of the swelling and redness. I travel a lot for work and don't have a week or two to lose to recovery time. Plus, I'm afraid of further nerve damage to the area.
I'm writing this review at the three month mark and I see no further improvement. In fact, I now have deep shadows under my eyes in addition to the bags, and somehow my skin texture in that area has changed; my concealer no longer spreads smoothly on the area - it kind of flakes and pills up, and I have to reapply it multiple times a day, which I never had to do before the procedure. Maybe it has something to do with the nerve damage? I don't know.
I do not recommend this procedure, at least for treatment of under eye fat deposits.
