When I was a teenager I had braces, but my...

When I was a teenager I had braces, but my orthodontist wasn't the best. He was all over the place. One day, after 1 year of wearing braces, he was confused and asked me "wait, why do you still have this tooth?" while pointing to a tooth. And on that day, that same day, he took out that tooth. He thought it was necessary, but in the end it kinda messed up my upper jaw, making the teeth in my upper jaw move to the left and lean to the left (because of the gap from the extracted tooth). My midline is now not in the middle of my mouth. And then he passed away when I still had my braces on. So I went to his daughter who was also an orthodontist to take them out because I was going to study abroad, she even commented "God, who did your braces?" because she saw that whoever did my braces, their work was really bad. And I said, "mmm... Your father!". Anyway, she took them off, but then she didn't mention anything about retainers.

So my braces were off. My initial problem, which was two-slightly-sticking-out front teeth in my upper jaw was fixed. But I had a new problem: asymmetric upper teeth. At that time it wasn't too noticeable, and I was so excited to finally take my braces off after years, so I decided to just ignore it.

Not even one year passed after taking of my braces, I noticed that one tooth in my lower jaw started to stick out. When I was skyping my family, my brother even asked me whether I missed a tooth because when I talked it looked like I had a gap. Years go by, I hardly saw myself in my reflection, even when I did, I wasn't talking. So I didn't notice that that one tooth kept sticking out more and more. Until one day I recorded a video of myself saying happy birthday to a friend, and when I watched the video I realised that I looked horrendous when talking because of that one tooth. I was self conscious but didn't really do anything about it.

I had a tooth ache one day, turned out I had to get a root canal. So I took an X-Ray for the root canal, and turns out that I have a supernumerary tooth buried in my lower jaw (my former orthodontist didn't do X-Ray before he did my braces, surprise surprise!). My hypothesis was this supernumerary tooth pushed the neighbouring teeth, causing my one of my middle tooth sticking out. So I started to look for options to fix this. Invisalign seemed to be the best one, since I was already in my early 20 and didn't want to wear braces. I went to an orthodontist, and she told me it would take about 2 years to fix my problems. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend 2 years wearing invisalign, so I didn't do anything about it again. 1 year passed, again, I recorded a video to say happy birthday to a friend, and I couldn't even watch myself in the video because it bothered me so much how I looked like I missed a tooth while talking. That's it, I'm going to actually do something.

So last January I went to 3 orthodontists regarding invisalign, including the one I visited the year before. The last one seemed to be the most promising to me. Like the other 2, she also estimated it to take about 2 years. That's it, done deal. I got my impressions taken in March, the trays came in May. She then sent me to an oral surgeon to get the supernumerary tooth taken out, but too bad I got the appointment for my surgery there on June 21. Because of that I could wear my first trays not until June 7. Which I will tell more on the next post.

I am really excited to see how my teeth develop. I want to share my journey here because I wished I had found this website WAY a long time ago, that way I would have been motivated to fix my teeth and got invisalign way sooner!
