53 year old in need of eyelid surgery

After many years of considering eyelid surgery for my lower lids, I now have a lot of loose skin on my upper lids and so have been back and forth about which to do first because I am unable for various reasons to do both at the same time. I had a bad experience with fillers in the tear trough area and so am extremely hesitant at this point to have lower lids done and have decided to proceed with a conservative upper bleph. I'll be going to an occuloplastic doctor in the DC suburbs. I'm scheduled for 2/17. Very nervous but eye lids are very heavy and hoping this will improve my appearance some even though my lower lids are probably just as bad.

I am about at 10 days out and admittedly a bit nervous especially after receiving the consent form. I know the risks listed are small but it's a bit nerve racking to read what could happen. In any case, I am proceeding. My doctor has been practicing for many years and does these procedures weekly and I like that she takes a conservative approach. When I was a teen, I had a much to aggressive rhinoplasty. Anyway from this point on, I am off all supplements and alcohol and just attempting to do all that I can in advance that will help minimize bruising and swelling and hopefully aid in healing. If I can capture some pics that show what the upper lids look like now, I will post. It's really more when I grab the skin with my fingers that you see all the extra skin. Aside from looking better, hopefully this will help me stop wrinkling my forehead so much as a result of me compensating for the heaviness.

I am adding 3 photos. You can see the heaviness in both of my upper lids especially in the corners. As mentioned in my initial post, my lower lids are in need of work too but starting with upper lids and hoping that will be an improvement for the time being.

I have been remiss in posting since my initial post prior to the procedure. I did go through with it on February 17 and it is now almost 8 weeks post. Although I still have some redness and a little bumpiness in places, I am very pleased thus far. Dr. Bair seems to be a hidden gem at least in the Real Self world and I guess she must get a lot of word or mouth recommendations/referrals. She is an oculoplastic surgeon and eyes are all she does. Her approach is conservative and I think my results prove that. The results are very natural and so no one would ever know I had this done. As well, both eyes look the same and I have lids again! I had local sedation and glad I chose that route as I did not experience any discomfort at all. I felt completely fine after returning home and did my best to ice regularly the first few days. Although work was only done on upper lids, I did experience quite a bit of swelling and discoloration on my lower lids, even more so than the upper. I would say the hardest part of the process is being patient and waiting until you look like yourself again. I returned about 6 days later to have the stitch removed which took less than 10 seconds and then saw her again at 3 weeks. I go back at 3 months. I know how nerve racking this can be so happy to answer any questions regarding the procedure or about Dr. Bair. Will try to get some pics posted but not always easy to capture how good it looks on camera.

She is a hidden gem on RS because she has no submitted official results pictures and no reviews, incl yours b/c you didn't post a review or update (only a comment) since your surgery. In addition, googling her does not show any website to find her or her work. She must have a substantial word-of-mouth practice and not rely on any internet or social media outlets.

Correct, she does not have a web site or rely on social media; I guess she does not feel the need. Of course there is no guarantee even if that exists. She seems to have a pretty thriving practice.

One Year Plus Review

I waited for more than a year to post this review for Dr. Bair. Well more than enough time to provide a fair evaluation of my experience. I cannot say that after all this time I am over the moon with the job that she did. I will give credit where it's due. That said, she did a pretty good job with the amount of skin she removed and both eye lids are now both more visible and look even. Of course that is one of the outcomes you want with this surgery. However, she did not do a good job with the placement of the sutures. She placed them too high and the scars left extend past the corner of my eyes. On one eye in particular the scar is still extremely visible. There are bumps on the end of each scar and bumpiness along the suture lines as well. From what I read, this can be from the sutures being in too long. So I don't if it's that or scar tissue. In my opinion this part of the surgery was done sloppily and does not look good at all.

I don’t feel her follow-up after was great. My surgery was in February and I believe I saw her last in May. After that visit, she did not request that I come back so see how things were progressing. I feel that if she really cared to know how my lids were healing she would have wanted me to come back for periodic follow-up(s). She has no idea what my lids look like beyond 3 or 4 months. Wouldn’t a doctor want to know the outcome of a procedure they performed ultimately turned out? I opted not to contact her and seek out another doctor for an opinion since I was interested in doing my lower lids as well and knew I did not want to return to have her do that procedure as well. All of her staff except for one were pleasant enough but I would not describe them as overly warm or friendly. One woman who I believe is her office manager was consistently unfriendly and never cracked a smile or offered a friendly greeting anytime I had to interact with her. Was never sure what that was all about.
Dr. Bair seems to work on a mostly older population who need the surgery because their lids are impacting their vision and that seems to be more her focus rather than cosmetic. My eye lids had become heavy but I was still far from needing the procedure because it was impacting my vision. Dr. Bair was always nice but I would say if you are looking to have your eyes done with someone that is coming at it at all from a cosmetic perspective, she is not the one. Having something done to your face that can potentially not turn out well can be/is very anxiety producing. I do feel that at times she tried to be assuring, but I don't feel she dealt with that part of the process well. I think anxiety is very normal but I got the sense that she thinks it’s no big deal given a comment she made to me.
