There are two kinds of stains Intrinsic and the extrinsic ones.Tetracyclin stains are the intrinsic kind ,They are embedded deep in the tooth enamel. The whitening gels are impervious to the intrinsic stains ,so the bleaching can not help to get rid of the stains caused by the tetracyclin
Tetracycline stains are embedded within the enamel of the tooth. These are called intrinsic stains. Zoom whiting and bleaching trays work only on extrinsic stains in the outer surfaces of the enamel. Whitening solutions cannot penetrate deep enough to rid the tooth of the stains caused by tetracycline.
Currently, there is only one whitening system on the market that has shown promise with respect to whitening teeth that have tetracycline stain. We use the KOR deep bleaching system in our practice and the results are truly amazing! Visit the KOR website to find dentists in your area that carry the KOR deep bleaching system. Prior to using the KOR system, we saw very mediocre results with ZOOM and Opalescence, even when followed by an at-home whitening regimen. The KOR system requires 2 weeks to condition your teeth in preparation for an in-office 1 hour whitening "blast". Good luck!
But its a tough thing to get rid of..Tetracycline staining goes thru out the entire tooth enamel and the grey color is the most stubborn to reduce. sometimes you can whiten for a long time with trays then do veneers to cover the 4-6 teeth in front that are the worst. Thats really your only options...Dr Thomas
Unfortunately, zoom whitening will not remove tetracycline stains, as the stains are deep in the tooth enamel. These are intrinsic stains. Zoom whitening can't penetrate deep enough into the teeth to remove the staining.
