Is it possible to develop allergy to silicon implants?

I had rhinoplasty silicon implant to my nose for over 15 years. Recently I had been regularly having inflamed turbinates and consistent sore throat. The ENT suggested that this is a chronic condition. Is it likely that I have developed an allergy to the silicon implant?

For the symptoms described i think it is very unlikely that what you are suffering is a reaction against the old silicone implant.I would follow the prescription of your physician and I would be surprised if eventually you find the implant responsible for your chronic inflammation of the upper airways.When facial silicone implants get involved into inflammatory or infectious problems they usually need to be removed straight away to avoid severe and disfiguring damage to the soft tissues.

Hi,First of all if the allergy was related to the silicone implant in your nose, the inflammation would be occurring " in the bridge of your nose" . What your describing sounds like seasonal allergies, commonly known as allergic rhinitis and post-nasal drip. The body immune system typically forms a capsule around silicone  implant but does not have an allergic type reaction to it. Silicone implants can also sometimes get infected. However, if yours has been in for 15 years, your present issues probably have nothing to do with the implant.Best,Dr.S.
