Are there any treatments that can lighten the color of the areolae and are they permanent?

My skin is on the lighter side and yet I have extremely dark areolae and nipples. This has always been an insecurity of mine as I don't like the dramatic contrast between that area and the rest of my skin. What treatments, if any, could be done to lighten the areolae, and are they permanent?
