Can I do veneers if my teeth have fillings? Or is it better/safer to do crowns?

Even if you have fillings, if you have substantial amount of tooth structure remaining it would be my recommendation to do veneers rather than crowns. Studies show that when the back side of the tooth is drilled away and prepared for a crown that the tooth is much weaker than if it weren't, and a veneer was done. Also, veneer will generally have less chance of needing a root canal and the gums should be healthier than a crown.However, your dentist should be doing all ceramic crowns on the four replacement crowns, which would be made of the same porcelain material as the veneers. My favorite porcelain material for veneers and all ceramic crowns on front teeth is EMax porcelain. They are beautiful, well fitting, strong and should last much longer than some of the other types of porcelain commonly in use.

first off if veneers are made, the old fillings can and should be incorporated into the veneers. that being said, veneers and crowns have different light reflection, etc. crowns can be made from many different materials. you can have metal or gold under the porcelain, or a totally tooth colored substance, or a full crown made from veneer porcelain. also, need to consider what the condition of tooth structure is under the existing crown. are there root canals with dark, stained tooth or is everything clean and crisp. bottom line, usually not as simple as it appears. good luck.
