I had a breast reduction 7 weeks ago. My doctor has given me the okay to return to normal exercise (including running/lifting), but every time I exercise (even low impact & lower body workouts) my breasts seem to swell and the scars get more red. I don't want to delay the healing process at all. Is it too soon to be doing exercise??
Answer: Swelling of breasts with exercise Since your surgeon cleared you to resume full activity, he or she must have felt you were healing well and it was safe to return. That being said, it is common to notice increases in swelling with certain activities for weeks and even months after surgery. If the swelling is bothersome, you could consider doing less strenuous activities or postponing exercise for a few more weeks.

Answer: Swelling after exercise? 7 weeks post breast reduction Thank you for your questions. I usually let patients go back to exercise at 6 weeks and gradually increase activity so by 8 weeks, they are doing what they want. The swelling and irritation you are describing are completely normal. It can take 3-6 months for the swelling issues to completely resolve. In addition, the new shape and position of your breasts can make them sensitive to things that you were not sensitive to before. So if a new bra is not fitting properly and the skin is somewhat numb still, there can be rubbing of the bra on the breast, irritating the breast, and you may not feel it. You just need to be careful that you are not doing too much and that you are wearing proper garments when doing activity.Hope this helps!

Answer: Excercise Following Breast Reduction Patients can typically begin exercising again 6 weeks after a breast reduction surgery. At this point, most patients are no longer wearing their surgical garments, bruising has subsided and swelling has decreased. I encourage patients to begin slowly and work their way back up to the intensity they were at before surgery. Please keep in mind that healing is different with each patient and these are just general guidelines. Your body will tell you what you can and cannot do. Follow up with your surgical team to ensure that what you're experiencing is normal.
