How Can I Treat Cuts in my Mouth from Metal Braces?

Question

I have cuts all inside the bottom of my mouth and some on the top. My lips also get really chapped for some reason, too. I also play basketball so occasionally a ball may hit me in the mouth.

Thank you Thomas for your question. I would highly recommend to wear a sports guard while you are playing sports. It will protect you and your mouth from injury. In regards to every day things, you might want to use soft dental wax in case braces bother your lips or cheeks.Good luck!

Your Orthodontist likely gave you some wax.  If not, most drug stores have it - ask for Orthodontic wax.  

	Putting the wax on the braces that are scuffing up your lip/cheek will help those areas heal up.  Over time, you will not need it, as your lips will become used to the braces.  Initially, getting some irritation is normal. 

	If you play lots of basketball, I suggest asking your Orthodontist to make you a custom mouthguard to fit over your braces (it won't be unusual to have to have it remade in 6-9 months).  Will help protect your teeth and prevent your lips from really getting cut up in case you get hit in the mouth area with a ball or an elbow!

Initially, the brackets may cut into the cheeks and be uncomfortable. After a while, the tissues will adapt (like a callous) so cutting will become rare. Until then, adding wax can help. As far as basketball, consider wearing an athletic mouthguard.
