What is the lowest my hemoglobin can be to have breast augmentation surgery? Will having beta thalassemia cause any complications.
Answer: Pre-Operative Medical Clearance Hi 422905, Thank you for the question. If you have an existing medical condition, you need clearance to undergo breast augmentation surgery. This is a case to case basis, especially for those who have preexisting health conditions that need to be controlled before the surgery. If you are concerned, you should speak with your plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns. Answer: Is the low hemoglobin "compensated"? To assess you more carefully we want to know if you feel short of breath, feel light headed, or have fainted. We would also measure your blood pressure and pulse rate, lying down, sitting, as well as standing and see if you have the above symptoms. Most people who have a hgb of over 100 are fine for 24 Hour Recovery breast augmentation surgery as we loose "no blood". We have a pre-operative check with our nurse or physician assistant as well as a review phone call with the anesthetist who would be attending and taking care of you. Your safety is our top priority and number one concern. We also perform all our surgery in an accredited "in-hospital" operating facility for your safety and peace of mind. We have had two three inspections with the CPSO - Out of Hospital Premises Inspection committee and passed them all with "flying colors". We are happy to see any patient for advice by telemedicine or in person during an office visit. M. Kara, MD, FRCSC. Plastic Surgeon. Specializing in 24 Hour Recovery Breast Augmentation.

Answer: Breast Augmentation with Preexisting Beta Thalassemia Thank you for your question, as it is an important one. Any preexisting condition must be cleared by the operating surgeon before moving forward. In your case, with beta thalassemia, it will be up to your plastic surgeon to decide what hemoglobin level is safe for your breast augmentation. If you have not already found a physician, I suggest locating an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon in your area and arranging an in-person consultation with him/her. This surgeon can review your existing medical conditions and the medications/treatments you are currently taking before determining if you are a good candidate for a breast augmentation procedure.
