Extraction vs. Apicoectomy tooth #3 with extensive bone loss? - Is the apico even worth it?

I had a root canal in tooth #3 15 years ago, there was a shadow above it and the dentist was watching it because I was asymptomatic until now. I was just on a course of antibiotics for an abcess. I saw the endodontist who said he could do an apicoectomy but also said I had extensive bone loss which was seen on CT scan. Is the apico even worth it? Should I even try to save this tooth or just have it pulled? Either was I am going to have to pay for the graft.

From your description the best route to continue is to remove the tooth, graft the area and replace with future dental implant.

This is a difficult question to answer not having a good x-ray. I like to save teeth whenever possible, but there comes a time when the likelihood of the tooth lasting just isn't practical. I think the best care for people's teeth is the least amount of dental work in their lifetime. You are going to have to trust someone who has seen the x-rays. Good luck.
