There are no disease processes associated with microdroplet Silikon1000 injections. The outside of every hypodermic needle and IV catheter made in the USA since WWII is coated with a layer of silicone for patient comfort. If a few microdroplets get into your bloodstream, it would be of no consequence since the size of a liquid silicone molecule is smaller than a red blood cell. There are no cases of necrosis or blindness associated with microdroplet facial steroid injections. Large-volume injections, like to enhance the buttocks, should be avoided. Large volumes of silicone injected into the bloodstream may lead to pulmonary edema and death. Great question! Hope this helps. Dr Joseph

Silikon 1000 is a trade-name for a particular brand of medical grade silicone.  When properly injected, there is very little risk of it getting into the blood stream.  All dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, and cosmetic plastic surgeons know that when they inject the medication just under the skin, you take particular care to withdraw the hub of the syringe to make sure that the tip of the needle has not entered a blood vessel. 

	With no evidence of that, the prractitoner proceeds to deposit tiny microdroplets of the material, waits six or more weeks, and then later adds some more at the next session, if needed.

Silikon is medical grade silicone gel approved for injection into the eye for treatment of retinal detachment. It is used 'off label' in other parts of the body as a filler. The most common areas of treatment are the lips and other facial depressions. With this form of silicone there are two major issues. The first is a possible delayed reaction of the body to the silicone which can result in redness, swelling and unwanted cosmetic changes. The second is the technique used to inject the material. The 'Microdroplet' technique is preferred so as to avoid placing a large amount of silicone in any one area. Ultimately only a small number of patients in my practice opt for this treatment due to the possible long term risks. However, I have to say that I have not seen a patient back in my practice with any issues related to the use of Silikon. Still, this is an issue that will put off a number of patients. That said, the results look great and lips feel and look natural if injected properly. Migration into the blood stream from limited facial injections should be extremely rare but could occur, just as it can with other injectable products. Exercise caution in choosing a physician to inject silikon since there are practitioners injecting all kinds of non-medical grade silicone into patients with almost guaranteed complications.
