The KoR Whitening System timing details?

Question

I've just started the KoR Whitening system. The video and instructions state that I should wait to start whitening each night until I'm ready to go to bed.  What's the rationale for the direction against starting whitening while watching television or reading a book with the trays in my mouth?Also, is there a recommended number of hours the trays should be in place each night?

It is recommended that you whiten at bedtime, so that you can be sure not need to remove the trays to talk, eat, drink, etc.  Another reason for the recommendation before bed, is because many people brush their teeth right before bed.  The gel is really only effective for about 2-3 hours, so your are perfectly free to make that 2-3 hour time period at an earlier time during the day or night, as long as you use it. Dr. Tau below gave the correct answer.  There are enzymes (glutathione peroxidase) in your saliva that destroy whitening gel ON CONTACT.  So it is imperative to keep saliva out of the whitening trays.  The specially fabricated and precise KöR-Seal Whitening Trays, will seal the saliva out of the trays.  However, when you are awake (even sitting in bed watching TV or reading a book), you salivate more and swallow more frequently and more deeply.  The swallowing will actually “suck” some of the whitening gel out of the whitening trays, which causes saliva to be sucked IN to the whitening trays.  However, we know that when you lay down in bed with the intention of sleeping, your salivation slows, your swallowing rate slows, and your swallowing depth slows.  Then when you actually fall asleep, your salivation and swallowing almost stop.  This is the reason for my instruction to wait until you are ready for SLEEP before putting in your KöR-Seal Whitening Trays, and why you should not sit in bed watching TV.  Hope that helps. Every dentist does things a little differently.  If you start using it before you go to bed and during bedtime you reduce the salivation that may occur.  You should have had special whitening trays fabricated which keep the bleach in and the saliva out.  Saliva inactivates the bleach.  I would recommend 8 hours per day to get optimal results.
