What can I expect during the process of being approved for a Breast Reduction?

Hello and thank you for your question.  The issue of having large breasts can be very upsetting and also cause you some physical problems.  Many insurances will not cover breast reductions, no matter how medically necessary they are.  That said, if you still want to try, getting your insurance to cover the surgery could be a lengthy process.  Your doctors (PCP, plastic surgeon) would have to submit paperwork and supporting documents including pictures of your breasts and body to the insurance company to get approval for the surgery.  Even when you have a strong case, sometimes you can still be denied coverage of the procedure.  The turnaround time for a response from your insurance can be as little as a couple of weeks to a few months.  Your plastic surgeon can answer all of your questions in more detail specific to you.  Hope that helps and best of luck to you.Ruth Celestin, MD
