Getting Teeth Filed and Invisalign Attachments Applied During Pregnancy

While I generally advise avoiding dental procedures during the first trimester of pregnancy for a number of reasons including a higher incidence of morning sickness, there are really no contraindications to performing some basic Invisalign procedures like Interproximal reduction (IPR) which is a small filing of enamel between teeth and the placement of a composite attachment on a tooth. More invasive procedures such as a dental extraction for space creation is another story and I would advise it be done after pregnancy term.

During pregnancy, there are certain things to consider before starting Invisalign.  First off, the aligners should be worn 22 hours per day, only removing them to eat or brush and floss.  Knowing that pregnancy changes one's life with things like morning sickness, increased gag reflex, frequent snacks, etc.; is this the best time to start such treatment?  Also, the attachments are made of composite, and BisDMA composite converts to BPA where as BisGMA composite does not.  BPA of course releases estrogen like chemicals into the body.  Also, fluoride besides causing nausea, competes with iodine receptors in the thyroid gland and is deposited in the newly forming bones as well as teeth of the baby.  The blue light is the least offensive ingredient.  Why not just wait until after the birth?
