Should lower and top front teeth ever touch? (Photos)

Current orthodontic treatment - top and bottom front teeth no longer touch when required - can’t bite off thin things. I have overjet so my top and bottom front teeth have never touched during a normal bite, however I was always able to bring them together for chewing i.e getting close to bone when eating chicken wings etc. Since orthodontic treatment, I can no longer do that, so can’t eat things that require a thin bite. It seems they won’t touch because a lower tooth at the back now impedes the movement. My question is, should they ever touch? Is my orthodontic treatment on the right track?
