Tongue space gets smaller by closing extraction gaps?

You are absolutely correct in your assertion that your tongue space is diminishing with bicuspid extraction orthodontics. This antiquated mode of treatment causes tongue space deficiency that can lead to a sleep breathing disorder and TMJ Dysfunction. This is the result of teeth being retracted and tipped back in an effort to close the extra space created by extracting teeth. When the front teeth are retracted the tongue is forced back into the throat causing a compromised airway. Your upper dental arch is also constricted causing the palate to rise into your nose further constricting your airway. I would recommend you stop the retraction mechanics that is currently being employed (rubber bands pulling teeth back to close excess space created from extracting bicuspids). A significant part of my dental practice is reversing bicuspid extraction orthodontics in patients who, after receiving this type of treatment, feel like they are suffocating in their own mouths. They often have sleep breathing disorders (sleep apnea), TMJ Dysfunction. poor facial profiles, sunken face, narrow smile, large looking nose, increased facial wrinkles and a general sense that, in spite of the teeth being straight, they don't like the orthodontic results. Clearly your challenge is convincing the treating doctor that the treatment is not the best treatment available. Good luck!
