Thank you for your question. There are many different types of numbing creams or gel available that contains only one or a combination of anesthetic agents without the epinephrine. In my practice we use a topical BLT. Benzocain, lidocain, tetracaine cream.  We allow the patient to sit for about 35-45 minutes to numb.  During this time they read or play on their phones.  This doesn't always take away the full sensation of the treatment but it does help.
