I am currently on a prescription of Spironolactone of 50 mg/once a day for hormonal acne. I am also on a 0.180 mg TriNessa birth control daily. Once I began the Spironolactone 2 weeks ago I began to spot and have been since, even though I wasn't on my sugar pills. My period now seems a lot heavier with a lot more side effects.

As far as spironolactone side effects, it can cause its own menstrual irregularities esp when you first use it. Since it is originally a diuretic blood pressure agent, you have to monitor potassium. Weight gain shouldnt really be an issue since you tend to urinate more fluids when you are on...

Hard to comment on politically, however clinically, the use of spironolactone to treat acne can be both effective and safe- providing potassium levels are monitored. For the occasional outbreak the steps outside below maybe alternatives to spironolactone.
