Question

Why does my skin look rough? I exfoliate once a week and I use moisturizer cream and yet it still looks rough. I have a micro exfoliating rice powder that I use to exfoliate and I use it gently.

Fractional laser is an amazing and highly effective treatment in our office. We use the laser treatment to help with acne scars, large pores, fine wrinkles, tissue collagen loss, scars, sebaceous hyperplasia, active acne, and for brightening dark pigmentation. Although there are very strong fractional lasers such as CO2 laser, we use lighter treatments for corrective skincare and maintenance of results. Our Thulium fractional laser, clear and brilliant laser, and Ultra Thulium laser are excellent options in our clinic. We also perform CO2 fractional and erbium depending on skin tone and tolerance for downtime. Patients do have to use a Melarase cream before and after treatment to help further reduce pigmentation after laser.  Melarase AM, Melarase PM, and Melapads can seriously improve surface sun damage and UV related pigmentation. Dark spots can improve with these treatments. I recommend fractional laser for incisional scars as well, especially after plastic surgery.

Exfoliation Frequency and Technique: While exfoliating once a week is generally a good practice, individual needs can vary. Over-exfoliation or using a product that's too harsh can strip the skin, leading to roughness. Ensure your exfoliating product is suitable for your skin type and that you're not applying too much pressure.

Environmental Factors: Weather conditions, such as cold, dry air, can lead to rough skin. Using a humidifier in your home and applying a thicker moisturizer during colder months might help.

Underlying Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or keratosis pilaris can cause rough skin. If you suspect an underlying condition, it might be helpful to consult with a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Diet and Lifestyle: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids can support skin health. Additionally, minimizing stress and getting adequate sleep can positively impact your skin's appearance.

Texture issues can be for many different reasons. Some potential factors are genetics, allergies, sun exposure, etc.  Visit an experienced aesthetician near you for an evaluation. Appropriate treatments can be recommended as well as medical grade skin care products like Transform MD.  We also recommend using sunscreen every day.
