Topical retinoids like RetinA can improve discoloration and uneven tone of the skin.  They can also improve acne, pores, texture, sun damage and fine lines.  They can be even more helpful in conjunction with other treatments such as chemical peeling or in combination with other creams such as hydroquinone (bleaching cream).  RetinA can be irritating and drying so it is important to use it as directed by your physician for your skin type.  It is also important to observe strict sun avoidance while on RetinA, which will also help to improve the discoloration.

Topical retinoids do provide some efficacy in treating hyperpigmentation of the skin.  Triluma is a cream that incorporates a retinoid with hydroquinone, a bleaching agent, and a topical steroid for the synergistic effect on treating melasma.
