I need to postpone my dental implants. Is my ear pain due to TMJ or a problem with the implant? (Photo)

As you would expect very difficult to answer without seeing you and obtaining proper records..I would advise taking steps to diagnose your problem..See the surgeon who placed your implant to take xrays and rule out or in TMJ problems..As you are beginning to wear splint this may diagnose your joint problem if your pain goes away while wearing the splint..Good luck.

Hi:The pain in the implant can be due to referred pain from the TMJ.  My suggestion is to start splint threrapy as soon as possible.  You should also have your dentist evaluate the implant just to make sure there is no infection.Best,Dr. Maddahi

Its a good sign that you don't have any pain when you touch around the implant.  More often than not, ear pain is related to a TMJ issue.  A properly designed splint (commonly called a night guard) can often help in developing a proper diagnosis.  Many TMJ problems are "occlusal-muscular", meaning there is a discrepancy between your muscles and your bite.  Less often, TMJ problems are caused by a problem with the jaw joint.
