How do I stop the extremely painful dryness in my skin from taking Minocycline and Spironolactone?

My dermatologist prescribed me to take Minocycline twice-a-day plus Spironolactone once-a-day. I did as told and the first week I was in so much pain from how dry my face got. just moving my mouth would hurt and my skin would crack and peal. Is there anything to help the dryness? Will the dryness ever go away? Or is this prescription not for me? I live in Utah and know the weather is very dry, I just don't know what to do.

At Laura A. Katz MD PC in Monroe, Mi, we tend to stay away from long term oral antibiotics due to side effects like you mentioned and the potential long term complications and skin sensitivity.  This does not always happen, but it sounds like that combination may not be right for you as you said.  Oil free moisturizers can be key with overly dry skin without increasing the chance of break outs.  Perhaps you would benefit from a cooling gel cleanser like Neutrogena deep clean cooling gel scrub, followed by an oil free moisturizer and then a topical instead of oral antibiotic like cleocin.  Once the dryness gets under control and if there is still cystic or hormonal acne present, products like spironolactone may be added.
