When can I expect to see firat signs of hair regrowth after telogen effluvium?

Question

Extreme shed of 1200 hairs a day since 1st March after severe pneumonia. Fall is less now but maybe as I only have a quarter of the hair i had at the start. Supposing this is telogen effluvium (3 i dependent derms say it likely is), when could I expect to see first signs of regrowth? How long can I go without regrowth and still expect regrowth from TE? Nothing regrowing yet. Thanks again! Grateful for all answers

From the very day it starts to fall, it starts to grow back. So by definition there is growth now but for many people the shedding rate is greater than the growing rate for 4-6 months. In other words, in a classic TE one would expect shedding to be intense in March and April and May and then reduce in June July and August. Whether it stops completely depends on the precise diagnosis and the degree of androgenetic hair loss you have. If you lift your hair straight up - there should be many 1-2 cm hairs today. Keep close follow up with your hair physician.

Thanks for your question. Every patient is unique in there course of telogen effluvium. For most the intial stressor/illness is about 4-6 months prior to the shed that takes place with telogen effluvium as the telogen phase of the hair cycle is typically this long. As far how long it takes to complete the shed I would say for most it is 3-4 months before they see a decrease in the amount of shed but can be even longer to appreciate the regrowth although most likely it starts sooner than appreciated by the individual. There are options that can be utilized to increase transition to anagen (growth) phase such as minoxodil, PRP, and I have seen good results with Viviscal but time alone is often enough to see full regrowth. If your TE was caused by the pneumonia and you have no other causative factors, you should see reversal slowly over time (6 months or so).
