I was told my crown was done wrong. What are my options? (Photo)

The ideal crown should meet flush with tooth structure.  Sometimes an existing crown has decay (cavity) that occurs and can be "patched" with a filling but otherwise we try to keep all of the crown margins (where the crown meets tooth) on tooth structure only when possible.  Your crown appears to have some margins on filling material.  This may or may not be causing you issues though.  Sometimes if the crown is hitting too high, it doesn't take much, then the tooth can become sore and uncomfortable to pressure and even heightened sensitivity to cold and /or hot.  Another issue would be the deep decay and broken tooth may have caused a negative effect on the nerve.  You might have another issue going on that would necessitate the need for a root canal.My suggestion would be to have the bite adjusted if doesn't feel right and to ask the original dentist what they think about the situation (does the tooth need a root canal) and if they will redo the crown to alleviate your concern about the gap at the margin.  If you no longer trust the dentist, find a new one that you can and have them look into the issue. 

From the xray, it does look like the crown does not fit well. I would go back to the dentist who did it and tell themyou are having problems with the tooth and what the other dentist said and ask to have the crown redone(if you trust them to do a good job) or ask for a refund so that you can have it done elsewhere. Just be calm and polite, not accusatory, but firm and see what happens. If the dentist refuses, you have the option of contacting the local dental society to see if they have a peer review process that can mediate a settlement oras a last resort, reporting the dentist to the state Dept of Health for them to investigate.  It is possible if the decay was that deep, that the nerve of the tooth is dying and the tooth may need a root canal now or in the future. you do not want a poor fitting crown to aggravate the situation, so getting it addressed right away is important.Good luck.
