Is an acid etching gel necessary for dental bonding?

I had bonding done to my top lateral incisors to make them appear longer. They fell off probably 8 times within a month. I am friends with my dentist so I would keep going back and he would re-do the bonding. I noticed that he never used an etching acid gel. One or two times he "roughed" up the tooth but that was about the only prep that was done. Could this be the reason they keep falling off or could this be attributed to my "hard bite"?
