Will I get results going from 0.05 Retin-A to 1.0 Retin-A and back again?

I often advise my patients to do something similar to what your are doing.  The key with retin A is consistency over time, not such much getting to a high dose fast.  For example using a low dose every night is better than using a high dose once a week.  It's sticking to it that makes the most difference.  If you are using a high dose and have side effects like redness and dryness it is going to discourage you from applying it regularly.  Think of it as a marathon, and you are the turtle, not the rabbit!
With lower doses you will get results as long as you are consistent.  It may take a bit longer to see the results but in my opinion, that is better then walking around red and irritated in an effort to speed the process.  I don't recommend mixing the retin A with a moisturizer, as is sometimes recommended, since this will hamper the absorption of the retin A into the dermis.  If you need to moisturize try to do it in the am.  If you need to moisturize at night, put the retin A on and give it "head start" by waiting 20 to 30 minutes before applying anything else. 
Good job using the retin A in the first place.  Along with sunscreen, it is the best thing you can do for your skin!
