Fake tooth hurts? Help

I got a permanent fake tooth in my front from.a root canal probably 5 years ago. Only last year it started hurting and throbbing and went away when i quit smoking. Now i am getting the same pain. The dentist told me i was crazy that i can feel.pain if there is no tooth there. And it is also bleeding when i brush it.

It's usually recommended to wait 3-5 days after dental surgery to begin smoking to prevent delayed healing and/or a dry socket in extraction sites.
