Can St John's Wort cause hair loss?

Question

I’ve been on St. John’s Wort for anxiety for the last 6 months at a dose of 1200mg/daily. I’ve noticed ever since I’ve started St John's Wort my hair has progressively gotten thinner and now on my 6 month it’s at its worst. Can St John's wort be the culprit? I know SSRIs can be linked to hair loss due to serotonin syndrome but can St John’s Wort have the same effect. I’ve never had hair loss issues prior to this even during high stress times. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

It's a possibility as everyone reacts differently to herbal medicines. I suggest discontinuation of the herb in order for you to determine if it is the cause. I would also suggest seeing an expert and considering PRP/Stem Cell treatments for hair loss. Best, Dr. Emer.

The use of medications during a time of stress can cause hair loss from many causes including (1) the stress itself, (2) the use of many medications you are on, (3) the presence of genetic hair loss activated by the stress.
