Can I use my Retin-A and a OTC Retinol on alternating nights?

Hi! I was able to get my hands on a 3 month supply tube of tretinoin .05% cream for anti-aging. It’s so expensive that I was thinking of using on alternate nights and using my currently otc retinol serum on the other nights to help minimize irritation and help stretch out the tube for a couple more months. Any issues with doing this?

Dear Real34,
It is safe to use Retinol and Tretinoin alternatively as anti-aging. But the result will be not the same as if you use Tretinoin daily.  Retin-A is more powerful than Retinol. Technically, retinol and Retin-A do the same thing.  Retinol first has to be converted into retinoic acid in order to be used by the skin. Retin-A is retinoic acid, so it can be used directly by the skin as soon as it's applied.

Thank you for your question.No there should not be any problems or interactions with alternating nights of using tretinoin and OTC retinol serums. Results may take longer as the frequency of tretinoin is lowered. I highly recommend you consult with a board certified dermatologist regarding any further questions and concerns about treatment.
