Can a scalp massager cause permanent hair loss?

I started taking Finasteride and Minoxidil in may. Atst I started to use a silicone scalp massager daily for about 10min per day for two weeks. After that my hair became noticeably thinner and has not improved. I don’t have any visible scarring, and my hair loss is diffuse. I applied some pressure with the massager and made small circular movements without dragging the bristles across my scalp. Is it possible that the massager caused this permanent thinning? Can only a scalp biopsy confirm this?

For a situation like this, you really need to see an expert for guidance. He or she can examine your scalp up close and help determine what’s truly happening. Yes, if any doubt still exists then a scalp biopsy can be done. Usually, however, it’s not needed. A few things are important to note: 1) finasteride and minoxidil help many but not all patients so it’s always a possibility that hair loss is worse because treatments are not helping. 2) it’s always possible treatments are helping but hair loss is worse because another condition was missed and is therefore not being treated 3) over vigorous scalp massage can cause temporary hair loss, yes 4) there is little evidence to support use of a scalp massage with a massager like this to treat hair loss and 5) no evidence based guideline in the world currently offers such a first line recommendation for treatment.
