HI, This is a common question that we receive. The short answer is no, your stomach will not shrink. Even though you will be eating much less than before, your stomach does not really change in size. While the balloon is in place, it will occupy space, which makes you feel full after eating and between meals. It also slows down the emptying of food from the stomach, which also makes you feel full after eating smaller amounts of food. These are the 2 mechanisms that lead to weight loss. After 6 months, when the balloon is removed, your stomach is anatomically the same as before the balloon was inserted. This means that you could potentially regain the weight that you lost, as your appetite might increase. This is also why it is critical that you continue to work with a dietician for an additional 6 months, to ensure that you keep the weight off. Studies show that majority of patients will keep the weight off, with perhaps only a minor (5lb or so) weight regain. Hope that helps!
Thank you for your question. Your stomach does not reduce in size. The balloon works by occupying space in your stomach and delaying emptying. In addition, there is the perception of stomach size reduction because your eating portions are smaller and your brain may be "resetting" a satisfying point.
Hello, and thank you for your question. Your stomach itself does not shrink after Orbera Balloon placement but the balloon itself (about the size of a small grapefruit) takes up about 1/3 of the stomach capacity which significantly reduces portion of food and liquid intake. This and the fact that the stomach will empty slower with the balloon in place both contribute to less hunger and the sense of feeling full longer.
No, the gastric balloon is not recommended for people who have had gastric sleeve surgery. The gastric sleeve is a type of bariatric surgery that involves removing a large portion of the stomach. This surgery can cause changes to the anatomy of the stomach, which can make it difficult or...
Hi, As others have noted, you cannot have an Orbera balloon if you have a LapBand. However, I'd like to clarify that even if the band is removed, you are still not a candidate for Orbera. This is because you will have scar tissue around your stomach after the LapBand is removed, which can lead...
Hi Jana, Yes, you would still be considered a potential candidate for Orbera. While Orbera is only FDA approved for individuals with a BMI of 30 to 40, it can be used "off-label" for people who fall outside of that range, assuming that it is the right treatment option and that there are no...
