Which is the best tray material to use for teeth whitening? Most whitening tray materials are thin and seem to fit fine. But, I have also heard some doctors tell patients they can use their retainers or Invisalign trays for whitening. Wouldn't that material just push the gel out?

First, make absolutely sure that the bleaching tray does NOT touch the gums. If they do, your dentist should easily be able to remove that excess to prevent the bleaching gel from getting onto your gums.
