Hi Jess, thank you for a wonderful question. Lots of people have this question in their mind but hesitate to ask. We try to put a lingual bonded retainer as a long term retention solution if there are some severe rotation movements corrected or gaps closed in front teeth. To give it extra security, we want to double it with removable retainer. So wearing both means extra protected. There is no harm with that. 

I place bonded (permanent) retainers when a patient asks for them, but I still have them wear a clear removable retainer at night.  There are multiple reasons I do this.  The bonded retainer will only hold the teeth it is bonded to, so the removable retainer helps hold the other teeth in place.  If the bonded retainer fails or breaks for some reason, then the removable retainer will still hold the teeth in place (sometimes you might not even realize the bonded retainer is broken).  Another reason to wear removable retainers at night is because it protects your teeth if you grind your teeth at night.
