After the treatment my dentist proposed I wear permanent lingual wires and removable retainers at night. Does wearing both make a difference? Yes, you can definitely have your teeth reshaped to remove the mamelons. It is painless to do and doesn't harm the teeth. I recommend having it done once you have completed treatment, like you suggested. Ask your orthodontist to do it for you.
You are right in your assessment that this is very unsatisfactory treatment.
You did not pay for teeth that are straight when viewed from underneath, you paid for a nice smile.
Your dentist probably does not have the experience with straightening teeth to deliver the result you want...
