My old health insurance covered gender dysphoria and related surgeries and hormone treatments but my new health insurance does not so I was wondering what sort of cost I would be looking at.
Answer: FTM Top Surgery Dear Max K, Thank you for your question. The answer is dependent upon the surgeon you use. I recommend doing research in Board Certified Operating Surgeons in your area and calling a few places for a quote. Best of luck to you.

Answer: Cost of FtM top surgery Thank you for your inquiry. Mastectomy for transgender men is a procedure that eliminates the breast by removing excess skin and most of the breast tissue. I utilize 5 different procedures and the procedure that is best for you will depend on your body size, your breast size, and the family history of breast cancer. We will make that determination during your consultation. This is a 3 hour outpatient procedure with a 14 day recovery off work, longer if you have a physical–type job. I recommend 4 weeks away from heavy pushing, pulling or lifting. We follow the standards of care for transgender healthcare established by WPATH. For gender confirmation surgery (non-genital), a single report from an experienced therapist is highly recommended. Our patient must be comfortable with the male lifestyle and have a recommendation from a Psychologist or similar licensed professional, demonstrating his commitment to the permanent physical alteration of his body with documented therapy. We also require a letter documenting hormone therapy if hormones are taken. The total estimated “cosmetic cost” is $7500-$7900, and this includes the surgical fee, facility fee, anesthesia, and follow-up care including a touchup procedure if needed. Augmentation of the pectoral muscles has additional fees. Let me share with you why some surgeons are priced less than other surgeons. Myth: All cosmetic surgeons are "real" plastic surgeons Reality: Unfortunately, anyone with a valid medical license can call themselves a plastic surgeon, hang up a shingle and begin treating patients! So plastic surgery has become a "buyer beware" specialty. Myth: All plastic surgery board certifications are the same Reality: Only the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) certifies that someone is fully trained in plastic surgery of the face and body. It takes from 6-9 years to achieve this training, and then you must pass a rigorous written and two-day oral exam. Myth: Only real plastic surgeons can perform any type of plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures Reality: It may be hard to believe, but anyone with a valid medical license can call themselves a plastic surgeon. The consumer must investigate carefully before he or she goes to see a physician. Myth: All plastic surgery procedures are done in an accredited operating facility Reality: Unless you are a board-certified plastic surgeon by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), you are not required to perform plastic surgery in an accredited facility. That may put you in harm's way if there's a problem. Myth: It's disrespectful to ask a plastic surgeon tough questions about their experience or expertise, or to ask them to show you some results Reality: Board-certified plastic surgeons prefer informed patients. Knowledge is power, and it's very important to make the right decisions. It will determine not only your outcome, but your safety as well. In general, an educated patient recovers better because there are no surprises and less anxiety about the procedure.
