I got a bad sew in from a hairdresser at the end of september. I took it down in november and when i did, my hair came out with it. I believe there was a fungal infection and i was told to use Nizoral. It was scabbed and flaky. There was dried blood. After a few weeks the affected area is now smooth and i cant really feel any folicules. Its been almost 3 months and im worried it wont grow back. I have an appoimtment to see a dermatologist soon. She essentially braided my hair too tight.

Traction injuries from tight braiding or sew-ins can sometimes lead to temporary hair shedding, but in certain cases, if the hair follicle is severely damaged, regrowth may be slower or limited.

Here’s what’s important to know:

Healing takes time: Even if the area looks smooth and follicles aren’t easily felt, the scalp can still recover. Hair follicles can take several months to start producing new hair after trauma. Three months is still early in the healing process.

Addressing possible infection: Since you mentioned scabbing, flaking, and potential fungal infection, it’s good that you’ve been using an antifungal like Nizoral. Keeping the scalp clean and free of infection is essential for hair regrowth.

Follicle viability: If the follicles were completely destroyed by trauma or infection, regrowth may not occur, but often the follicles are dormant and can recover with proper care.

Next steps: Your dermatologist will likely examine the area to assess follicle viability and scalp health. They may recommend treatments to stimulate regrowth, such as topical minoxidil, gentle scalp care, or in some cases, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy. Hair transplant surgery is typically considered only if the follicles are permanently damaged and nonfunctional.

Be gentle: Avoid any tension, chemical treatments, or heat styling while the scalp heals to maximize your chances of regrowth.

Often hair that are in an infected area of the scalp shed. A normal sleep cycle for a hair follicle is 3-5 months. So you will have to wait another 3-6 months to find out whether or not those hairs that shed are going to grow again. If worst case scenario occurs and they do not regrow that area of the scalp can be successfully transplanted.
