In my opinion, finasteride is safe for most postmenopausal women. However, if there is a history of breast cancer or BRACA Gene, I would consult with your oncologist as differing opinions exist. Spironolactone can be utilized in post menopausal women. Oral or topical minoxidil is suggested with either medication.

Finasteride can be an option for post menopausal women. The doses, however, are very different for women that men. Women require 2.5 to 5 mg whereas men require only 1 mg. The most common side effects of finasteride in post menopausal women is reduction in libido which occurs in about 10-15 % of women. Other side effects seen include weight gain (minor and uncommon), mood changes (depressed mood), fatigue, breast tenderness, muscle soreness, rashes (rare), liver enzymes elevation, headaches. Finasteride can be quite effective for post menopausal women with androgenetic alopecia. 60 % to 70% of users are expected to benefit.
