I had a BBL in 2020, i have gained alot of weight since then due to two pregnancies. I have been approved for gastric surgery. I wanted to know how would my BBL be affected by gastric bypass surgery? Im currently 243lbs, 5’5. I have always had curves: legs, hips, little butt; however , my BBL made it more defined and added volume

Hello, and thank you for asking this great question! It is very common for patients to worry about losing their cosmetic investments after bariatric surgery, especially after pregnancies.
At 5'5" and 243 lbs, your BMI is roughly 40.4. Because Gastric Bypass surgery will help you lose a very significant amount of weight, yes, your BBL will be affected, but not necessarily ruined. Here is what you can expect medically and aesthetically:
1. You will lose volume in your buttocksA BBL relies on transferred fat cells. When you have bariatric surgery, your body burns fat for energy from all over your body, including the fat cells that were transferred during your BBL. Because you are going to lose a massive amount of weight, you will see a decrease in the volume and size of your buttocks.
2. You will likely keep your "shape"The good news is that fat cells that survive a BBL become a permanent part of that area. Even though those cells will shrink as you lose weight, the distribution of fat was permanently altered by your plastic surgeon. Because you naturally had curves to begin with, and the BBL defined them further, your new, smaller body will likely still retain that "hourglass" shape&mdash;it will just be a smaller, much healthier version.
3. Skin laxity is the real factorThe biggest change you will notice isn't just the fat loss, but loose skin. Depending on your skin elasticity after your pregnancies and massive weight loss, the buttocks may experience some sagging.
My advice:Do not let the fear of changing your BBL stop you from getting your Gastric Bypass. Getting your health back and reaching a safe weight after two pregnancies is the priority. Many bariatric patients choose to have a cosmetic revision or skin removal surgery 12 to 18 months post-op to "lift" and perfect their shape once their weight has stabilized.
Focus on a healthy recovery and a high-protein diet to preserve muscle mass, which will also help support your glutes! Wishing you a very successful bariatric journey.
