How do you develop an overbite even after braces?

If a person has an overbite to start, but was corrected during orthodontic treatment, the return of the overbite could be do to several things. 1. If the original correction was not complete, including the correction of the angulation of the front teeth, there will be more of a tendency to relapse. 2. If retainers were not worn properly, teeth tend to return to the way they originally were. 3. If clenching occurs or adverse tongue posture (lateral tongue thrust) the bite could open up in the posterior, causing the overbite to come back. The best thing to do is to have your orthodontist reevaluate your situation. Most likely a new retainer is needed with what is called an anterior bite plate that is worn to eat and sleep with. This may be able to reverse the overbite tendency with out having to go back into braces.
