Can platelet rich plasma cause melasma?

Question

I am currently treating hyper pigmentation on my lower breast. I got a laser treatment last week and today I got platelet rich plasma. Some of the skin has become lighter but I noticed a dark area, almost like melasma. So can you please tell me if platelet rich plasma is likely to cause this melasma? Or should I just give it time to fade? Or should I continue with further laser treatment and PRP in order for it to go away faster?

PRP has not been shown in research to cause Melasma. PRP does cause lightening of the skin tissues which may have caused a darker pigment to appear more pronounced. I suggest following up with an experienced Aesthetics office for an in-person examination and to determine which treatments your pigmentation can best be corrected with.Best, Dr. Anil Shah

Thank you for your message! PRP does not typically cause darkening of the skin. Any type of needle injection can cause a bit of hyperpigmentation. Laser resurfacing, however, can cause hyperpigmentation, meaning certain areas get darker. Typically this risk is higher in those with darker skin tones. I would recommend a follow up with your provider for further assessment!
