I have sensitivity after having a temporary crown fitted. Will it go away in time?

It can be normal to have sensitivity with a temporary restoration.  If the sensitivity is minimal, ibuprofen can help, however, if the sensitivity is extreme it would be best to not seat the permanent restoration.  The tooth should then be evaluated by an endodontist to make sure it does not need a root canal prior to final cementation of the permanent crown.

Sensitivity under a temporary crown is not abnormal.  The temp cement does not seal or bond to the underlying tooth like the future permanent cement will.  This means that cold, hot or even movement of the temp may cause sensitivity or discomfort.  If the discomfort is very minor typically Ibuprofen can help take care of this.  However if you are in major discomfort, I would let your dentist know and see if the permanent crown can be rushed back from the dental lab or if a stronger medication can be called in to get you through.
