Is there a difference between treating dermal pigmentation and tattoos with laser?

Question

I find no promising pictures of dermal pigmentation completely removed (no sign of there ever being hyperpigmentation), usually there's just a minor improvement, but I have seen rare cases with tattoos. Are tattoos easier to eliminate completely? I would think that if a tattoo can be removed completely, pigmentation should as well. Please tell me your opinion, I have a long lasting dermal PIH I want to remove 100%, but I'm afraid it's not possible at this point.

Hi urlm.  Yes, in some cases, dermal pigment can be removed completely, but it all depends on what the condition is.  We remove dermal pigment associated with tattoos, birthmarks, traumatic scars and hemosiderin staining.  In all cases this is done with q-switched lasers.If your dermal pigment is associated with a hormonal condition called Melasma, then we would not use lasers as it can make the condition worse.  To see examples of dark marks on the skin, you can visit the following link.

Hyperpigmentation needs a combination approach, with tattoo lasers to get improvement. Hyperpigmentation can be improved with a combination of lasers, Aerolase, microneedling/prp, skin lightening, peels, and skin care. Sun protection is essential. Thanks for posting. You present a very common problem. PIH is a function of your skin genetics. Meaning there is little you can do to control the PIH from developing other than trying to avoid dermal irritation. After treating PIH for years, I've come to believe the response to the 1064 YAG laser we use most often is also based on you skin genetics. I've seen almost complete clearance with 2 treatments in some patients, while others show little difference after 4 or 5 sessions. The laser is used in the same manner with the same settings! Complicating the process is that PIH often occurs in areas where irritation is impossible to avoid and can recur easily. Best of luck, Dr. M
